Wind rush Child Summary

Zainab Alam

The author of this heart-touching poem is John Agard. He talks about his voyage, when he along
with his parents emigrates from their homeland Jamaica, to the UK.

The poem describes the thoughts and feelings of a young child as they go on a long journey, leaving
the world they know behind them. They think of the things that they will miss about their home but
also describe what they will have in their new home. He continuously mentions his grandmother as
she didn’t go with them to UK. The fact that the child is thinking about their Grandmother on their
journey, shows how much value she hold for him in his heart. John also talks about how he will
influence the Caribbean culture to British audiences. He has dedicated this poem to the youngest
passenger in the ship, Vince Ried. He is quite sad to live his country, but he keeps on thinking of
the positive things when he will reach UK. He keeps on recalling what his grandmother said to him,
“walk good…. Walk good” which suggests confidence for the journey ahead. The main point of the
theme is the world they were leaving behind as well as their anticipation of ‘new beginnings’.
