Lesson Children will focus on the different ways patterns can be made with colors and shapes and how to extend it.
Summary:
Estimated I plan to divide this lesson into 4 days. The lesson will be 120 minutes long.( each day 30 mins in
Duration:
total) Each day the lesson will be 10 minutes long as a class together such as reading a book,
watching a video, hearing a song.
Then there will be additional 20 minutes of the classroom being divided into 2 groups, each group
will do a different activity. Then we will do the same activities the next day however each group will
then do a different activity.
We will start the week by reading a book called “Learning Fun: Colors, Shapes, and Patterns” by Highlight. This will be an
introduction to the week this book guides pre-K students with identifying their shapes, colors, pattern recognition and sorting.
This activity will take about 20 minutes. We will decorate the room themed to this book so that everything ties together.
Day 1:
The first 10 minutes will be revieing our shapes and sizes and how patterns can come together we will listen to a video on YouTube
called Patterns and Colors Children's Song | Green Orange Shapes Patterns | Patty Shukla-
https://youtu.be/PxGEcfyD49U
20 minutes I will split the classroom into 2 groups. One group will go play with blocks that are solid colors such as red,
yellow, green, blue, orange, students will be able to create their own patters. They will be able to be creative with
classmates such as building towers with patters such as 2 yellow blocks, 3 blue blocks, 2 yellow blocks and 3 blue
blocks etc.
The second group will then be working on work sheets. I will have cut outs of shapes such as circles, squares, and
triangles. Students will then work individually to glue them onto a sheet to make a pattern. Students will then also
have to color them to make a pattern.
I will be going around and asking students questions on what they are doing and making sure they are understanding.
Day 2: We will begin the classroom by talking about patterns and what is around us in the classroom that can be made
into patterns. Such as chairs and tables etc. This will be a 10-minute review.
20 minutes I will split the classroom into 2 groups. This will be the same activity as yesterday however each group will
now do the other activity, they did not do the day before. One group will go play with blocks that are solid colors such
as red, yellow, green, blue, orange, students will be able to create their own patters. They will be able to be creative
with classmates such as building towers with patters such as 2 yellow blocks, 3 blue blocks, 2 yellow blocks and 3 blue
On day 3, we will be using computers as a classroom for 20 minutes playing a game of kahoot. I will explain how the
game will be played. I will have questions on the kahoot such as showing 1 correct pattern and then other patterns
that are not correct. This will be a way to make sure children are understanding the concepts of patterns.
On day 4 we will all sit in the carpet and make a pattern using a smartboard in the classroom such as one child saying
circle another child saying square another child saying triangle another child saying circle and keeping it going. Each
child will get a chance to go up the board and draw it until each child gets a chance and we will look at the pattern.
This will be a 10–15-minute activity.
Then each child will go to their seats and use their laptop. I will instruct them to log into roomrecess.com This will be
an activity that children will put their knowledge and math skills.
There are games such as it shows a pattern of a square and triangle, square and triangle, and below there are options
from 5 different shapes, and the child will drag the correct next shape with the mouse such as dragging the triangle to
continue the pattern sequence.

Students can use this website to learn more about patterns and shapes.
Differentiated Instructional Support: Describe how instruction can be differentiated (changed or altered) to
meet the needs of gifted or accelerated students: students can incorporate more shapes such as stars,
pentagons, house shapes etc. into their patterns.
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling with the material:
I will have examples of patterns students can follow.
