Experiment No: 01
Experiment Name: Study on Different Types of Denim Fabric
Identification.

Theory:
Denim: Traditional denim fabrics are woven by interlacement of indigo dyed warp and grey weft. The
sequence or order of interlacement of warp and weft may be varied in order to produce different denim
weave designs. Although the traditional denim is a 3/1 RHT warp faced fabrics, a variety of denim fabric
are made with different weave designs, such as 2/1 twill weave, broken twill, zig-zag twill, reverse twill
etc. Today, denim fabrics are also manufactured with fancy design in order to meet the latest fashion.
Denim fabrics normally made of weight range of 6.5 to 15.5 oz per sq. yd.

Objectives:
1. To find the weave of denim fabric.
2. To identify fabric weight of denim fabric.
3. To compare different color and effects of denim fabric.
4. To find the fabric width of denim fabric.
5. To compare shrinkage (length and width) of denim fabric.
6. To compare different constituents (fiber composition) denim fabric.

Requirements:
1. Denim fabric
2. GSM Cutter
3. Digital Balance
4. Light Box etc.

Working Procedure:
1. Observe different denim fabric swatch card.
2. Categorize different denim fabric swatch card.
3. Then prepare list of denim fabric swatch based on weave, color, effect, weight, shrinkage,
width and fiber composition.
4. Based on the parameters of comparison, differentiate and compare different denim fabric
swatch.
5. Compare different denim fabric swatch board based on different washes.
6. Finally try to find different denim fabric based on compared parameters.

Conclusion and Comments:
This session was helpful in that sense we tried to identify denim jeans and hoe they look like after
washing. Different composition of fabric have been taken for this experiment and results sometimes are
similar and sometimes are different, depends on which process do the fabrics have to go through and
which chemicals are used . Experiment helps us to understand the shade variation after certain washing
steps that are variable for different fabrics having different compositions. Course teacher helps us a lot
throughout the session.

Raw denim incorporates different sizing materials so it is important to get the de-sizing process done in
an effective manner so dust free garments can be found as the final product and different wash look
appearance can be seen. This can draw customers attention and profitable for the manufactures as well.
