Cambridge Senior Mathematics:
Australian Curriculum/VCE
builds on a proven teaching and
learning formula to support the new
AC/VCE Mathematics Study Designs
for implementation in 2016.
VIDEO EXAMPLES
Videos for the most important worked examples and concepts support
students to develop a deep understanding of fundamental skills and enable
them to work independently.
WORKED SOLUTIONS
Comprehensive worked solutions for all questions in the print textbook are
provided in the Interactive Textbook as an option that teachers can choose to
make available to students.
EXTENSIVE REVISION
The Mathematical Methods, Further and Specialist student texts each include
a number of revision chapters, with extra questions on groups of chapters
plus one chapter that revises the whole book. In addition, Year 11 General
and Maths Methods students can access Years 9 and 10 HOTmaths lessons
through their online textbook to revise required prior knowledge.
MORE FEATURES OF THE STUDENT TEXT
Example 19
In Stephen’s class 12 students study Chinese, 20 study French, and 8 study both Chinese
and French.
a Given that a student in his class studies Chinese (C), what is the probability that they
also study French (F)?
b Given that a student in his class studies French, what is the probability that they also
study Chinese?
Solution Explanation
C F Display the information in the question in a Venn
diagram. The numbers in brackets indicate the
number of elements in each region.
(4) (8) (12)
If we know that the student studies Chinese, the
sample space is restricted to those 12 students. From
the Venn diagram we can see that 8 of these students
8 2 also study French.
a Pr(F | C) = =
12 3
If we know that the student studies French, the
8 2 sample space is restricted to those 20 students. From
b Pr(C | F) = =
20 5 the Venn diagram we can see that 8 of these students
also study Chinese.
This example clearly demonstrates that, in general, Pr(A | B) Pr(B | A). So care needs to be
taken when determining conditional probabilities.
Conditional probabilities can also be calculated from a table, as shown in Example 20.
With TI-Nspire and Casio ClassPad support built in Example 20
to all student textbooks, no additional calculator 500 people were questioned and classified according to age and whether or not they
material is required. regularly use social media. The results are shown in the table.
One person is selected at random from these 500. Given that the selected person is less
than 25 years of age, what is the probability that they regularly use social media?
Solution Explanation
200 5
Pr(Yes | Age < 25) = = If we know the person is less than 25 years old, then
240 6
the sample space is restricted to those 240 people.
Of these, 200 regularly use social media.
The Interactive Textbook, powered by Cambridge HOTmaths, is an online version of the student
text optimised to be read on screen through an internet browser.
It provides effortless and immediate access to a host of interactive features to enhance the
teaching and learning experience of the student text. Used with the Online Teaching Suite,
the Interactive Textbook enables teachers to monitor student progress through the learning
management system and use the reporting function.
Features include:
Interactive widgets

book with its rich digital resources.
• The Online Teaching Suite provides full access to the Interactive and PDF Textbooks.
• An online Test Generator allows you to create customised tests from a huge bank of
questions. Tests can be printed or assigned online for automarking, and are suitable for
assessment, homework tasks, practice quizzes and trial exams. Teachers can share their
customised tests with others in the school, building a whole-school assessment bank.
Ready-made tests are also available.
• When linked to students using the Interactive Textbook online, the Online Teaching Suite
records students scores on practice quizzes and online tests, and reports individual and
class progress (reports can be printed to provide feedback). Data from student Interactive
Textbooks will directly feed in to the Online Teaching Suite.
• A simple Task Manager allows teachers to assign specific activities to individuals, groups
or whole classes, helping to differentiate learning. The Task Manager reports on task
completion as well as results.
• Digital worked solutions are available with all student textbooks, and teachers may
choose to make these accessible to their students or restrict them to suit the needs of
their class.
• Curriculum grids for the new VCE Study Designs are provided.
Available for purchase separately, the Online Teaching Suite is accessed through a HOTmaths
account using the unique 16-character code supplied on purchase.
