1 Managing a franchise involves a combination of different skills ranging from personnel management to
accountancy and business administration. Exactly how much of your time will be spent on each of these
aspects of running a business depends on the type of franchise that you decide to open. If you are running a
fast food outlet, then hiring and keeping staff will probably take up much of your time. However, if you choose
a service franchise you’ll probably have to concentrate more on selling yourself to new customers and
maintaining good relationships with your existing clients.
2 You can’t start a franchise without money so the first thing to know is how much you can afford to put into
the business. This may mean that you will have to mortgage your home and use any personal savings that you
may have. But even that may not be enough. You are almost certainly going to need a bank loan to get the
business started. Sometimes, it may be possible to get financial help from government small business
assistance schemes but, if not, you are going to have to work out this with a banker.
3 Many people thinking of becoming franchisees see it as the simplest way to start a business. They dream of
being their own boss and running their own company but few understand the importance of choosing the right
type of franchise. You must believe in the product or service you are going to sell. This will help to establish
trust and a good working relationship with the franchisor as well as ensuring a continued dynamic and positive
attitude towards the business even if times get tough.
4 It is essential that you know what you are letting yourself in for. A little research will tell you about the
history of the franchise, what the track record is and what problems have risen in the past. It’s also a good idea
to carry out some market research to make sure there is a niche for the franchise product or service in your
area. If you opt for a retail business, you should be aware of the importance of a good location. Most
franchisors will want to inspect the proposed outlet before signing a franchise agreement.
5 last but not least, to be successful in this game, you should be the sort of person who can handle the
pressures of working long hours, taking financial risks and having to settle all the daily management problems
of running your business. You will be working in a competitive environment where achievement will be the
only guarantee of success. You must be the kind of person who can accept help and guidance from the
franchisor. If you don’t like restrictions and resent being told what to do, then franchising is possibly not the
best business for you.
