Crisp leaf lettuce belongs to numerous varieties of garden lettuce. Lately, its popularity grows with
every season. Juicy, grenn leaves became foundations for many salads and healthy food hype
expands the ranks of its admirers. Unfortunately, the lettuce from industrial cultivation is very
heavily fertilized in most cases - a factor that does not necessarily contribute to our health. Buying

Offered seeds are of the mid-early crisp lettuce variety. Heads are large and rather compact. The
leaves have coarse, bladdery surface that is both firm and shiny. The heads usually acquire lively
green colour that, however, depends on the intensity of sunlight that shines on them. Crisp lettuce is
valued for its delicious flavour and it owes one of its common names, iceberg lettuce, to the
crackling "ice-breaking" sound when bitten. Long storage life is what consumers value, too. Even a
week in a fridge would not hamper its looks and taste. In contrast to other lettuce varieties it crisp
leaf lettuce can be cut with a knife without sacrificing any of the nutrients.
Crisp lettuce should be planted from seedlings, however, its resistance to cold makes it possible to
sow the seeds directly to the ground in March already. Planted between April and May yields harvest
in a relatively short time. It requires good, moist soils and sunny sites.

Grow Parris Island Cos Lettuce

In late winter, as we thumb through seed catalogs anxiously awaiting the next gardening season, it can
be tempting to buy seeds of every vegetable variety that we haven’t tried growing yet. As gardeners, we
know that just one tiny, inexpensive seed can soon become a monstrous plant, producing more fruit than
we can even eat and most of us only have feet to work with in the garden, not acres. While some plants
take up a lot of room in the garden, lettuce takes very little space and can be grown in the cool
temperatures of spring, fall and even winter in some regions when very few other garden veggies are
growing. You can also plant different varieties of lettuce in succession for a longer season of harvesting
fresh leaves and heads. One excellent lettuce to try in the garden for a long harvest is Parris Island cos
lettuce. Parris Island Lettuce Info Named after Parris Island, a small island off the eastern seaboard in
South Carolina, Parris Island lettuce was first introduced in 1952. Today, it is celebrated as a reliable
heirloom lettuce and is a favorite romaine lettuce (also called cos) in the southeastern U.S. where it can
be grown in fall, winter and spring. It can be slow to bolt in the heat of summer if given a little afternoon
shade and daily irrigation. Not only does offer a long growing season, Parris Island cos lettuce also
reportedly has the highest nutritional values of any lettuce. Parris Island lettuce is a romaine variety
with dark green leaves and a cream to white heart. It forms vase-shaped heads which can grow up to 12
inches (30 cm.) tall. However, its outer leaves are usually harvested as needed for garden fresh salads or
a sweet, crisp addition to sandwiches, rather than the whole head being harvested at once. In addition to
its long season and exceptional nutrition values, Parris Island is resistant to lettuce mosaic virus and
tipburn. Growing Parris Island Cos Plants Growing Parris Island cos is no different than growing any
lettuce plant. Seeds can be sown directly in the garden and will mature in about 65-70 days. They should
be planted in rows set about 36 inches (91 cm.) apart and thinned so that plants are no closer than 12
inches (30 cm.) apart. Lettuce plants require about an inch (2.5 cm.) of water per week for optimal
growth. If growing Parris Island cos lettuce during the hot summer months, they will require extra
water to prevent bolting. Keeping the soil cool and moist with layers of mulch or straw will also help it
grow through difficult weather. Keep in mind that, like most lettuce types, slugs and snails can
sometimes be a problem.

Lollo Rosso lettuce is small to medium in size, averaging 15-20 centimeters in diameter, and
grows in a tightly compact, rosette shape. The frilly and curled, fan-shaped leaves are light
green in the center and transition to a deep red-maroon around the edges. Connected at a
central base, the leaves do not form a head and are made up of single branches. Lollo Rosso
lettuce is tender, crisp, and chewy with a sweet, slightly bitter, and nutty flavor.

Lollo Rosso lettuce, botanically classified as Lactuca sativa, is an annual, Italian, red loose-leaf
variety that is a member of the Asteraceae family. Also known as Lollo Rossa, Lolla Rosso, and
Continental Red, Lollo Rosso lettuce is a cut-and-come-again lettuce which means the outer
leaves can be harvested and the plant will continue to grow more leaves throughout the season.
It is also grown as a baby leaf variety to include in many salad mixes and is a popular variety to
grow in home gardens for its resistance to extreme temperatures. Favored for its texture, color,
and curly edges, Lollo Rosso lettuce is most commonly used fresh in salads.

Lollo Rosso lettuce contains vitamins A and C, folate, fiber, antioxidants, and iron.

Applications
Lollo Rosso lettuce is best suited for raw applications as its bright color, curly texture, and mild
taste is showcased when fresh. The leaves are most popularly added to salads with other greens
as the curly leaves increase the surface area and have the ability to catch and hold salad
dressing. The leaves can also be used as a garnish, layered in sandwiches, torn and sprinkled
over soups, or served as a bed for cooked meat. Lollo Rosso lettuce pairs well with radish,
carrots, cherry tomatoes, watercress, frisee lettuce, parsley, pears, pomegranate seeds, garlic,
onions, fennel, shallots, poultry, sunflower seeds, gorgonzola cheese, olive oil, balsamic, and
champagne vinegar. The leaves will keep up to four days when stored in the crisper drawer of
the refrigerator.

Ethnic/Cultural Info
Lollo Rosso lettuce was believed to be first cultivated by the Egyptians and was considered to be
an aphrodisiac and a medicinal remedy. The leaves and sap would be made into a concoction
with juniper berries, beef, and frankincense to help reduce symptoms of stomach aches. Today
Lollo Rosso lettuce has remained a popular specialty lettuce and was awarded the RHS Garden of
Merit award in 1993, recognized for its color, taste, texture, and ease of growth.

Geography/History
Lollo Rosso is believed to have been developed from the wild species, Lactuca seriola, that is
native to Europe, North Africa, and Asia. The exact origins are unknown, but the variety is
thought to have been grown in Italy and was first cultivated by the Ancient Egyptians. Today
Lollo Rosso can be found in online seed catalogs and at farmers markets and specialty grocers in
North America, Africa, Europe, and Asia.

START SEEDS OUTDOORS
In cool early spring weather, start seeds in finely worked soil in full sun. Sow 1/4 inch
deep and 1 inch apart in rows 6 to 8 inches apart and cover lightly. Tend carefully and
keep evenly moist. Gradually thin seedlings out by cutting them with scissors, leaving
remaining plants to stand 12 inches apart so heads have room to fully size up and
mature. For a constant supply, make several sowings a few weeks apart until summer
weather turns hot. Plant again in late summer for fall harvest.
 

GROWING NOTES
Lettuce thrives in cool conditions with consistent moisture. Weed, water and thin
carefully for best quality heads. If birds are attracted to the young seedlings, cover
them with floating row covers or netting.
 
HARVEST AND USE
Savor young thinnings in your first spring salads. Then harvest plants by cutting
mature heads when they feel firm and well-filled out. Be sure to thin properly and
keep evenly moist for sweet tasting, full heads. Pull and discard or compost over-
mature plants if they begin to elongate (“bolt”) in hot weather as leaves turn bitter at
this stage.
