CONCEPT NOTES:
 Freedom is a political concept which refers to the freedom of an individual from oppression,
compulsion or coercion. Political freedom entails recognition of the rights and civil liberties
of individuals. Theology views freedom as living a life free from sin and living according to
God’s will.
 Philosophers define freedom as being based on free will or the capacity of persons to
choose their own actions and decisions. The exercise of free will should be based on sound
judgement and rational thinking.
 Internal constraints are actions or interventions that restrict free will, while external
constraints are obstacles that restrict free action.
 Free will is often contrasted with determinism, the belief that every event and action has
an underlying cause. There are various views on the relationship between free will and
determinism. Most philosophers believe in a compatibilisticview- that even if we live in a
deterministic world, we are still able to exercise our free will in many situations.
 Moral responsibility refers to the status of deserving praise or blame for one’s actions and
decisions. For an individual to be considered morally responsible for his or her actions, he
or she must possess and exercise free will. We should therefore exercise our freedom
responsibly in whatever decision or action we make.
