The big idea(s) or essential question(s)

Students should be able to understand what time it is, the difference between mornings (am) and
evenings (pm), and how to read it.

State of Idaho and/or common core standards addressed

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.B.3
Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
Objectives
(what the students will be able to do as a result of the lesson)

Know the difference between am and pm

Draw time on an analog clock

Understand that the small hand represents the hour and the big hand represents the minutes

Understand the relationship between an analog clock and a digital clock

TSWBAT

Tell time on an analog clock

TSWBAT

Set time on an analog clock

Materials and/or technology Needed

 Worksheets
 Pencils
 Whiteboard
 Dry Erase Markers
 Judy Plastic Clock (Class Pack)

Activities/procedures (include anticipated time for each)

Introduction/activator
Start with having a conversation about how time is important to everyone. It keeps us on time,
allows us to make a schedule, and allows us to get the right balance of sleep and awake time.
Then we will talk about how we add am and pm to keep track of the day. Am (after midnight) is
from 12:00 (midnight) to 11:59, all before noon, while pm (passes midday) is from 12:00 (noon) to
11:59, all afternoon.

Ask students if they know what a digital or analog clock is and if they know how to read it.

Class activities Class activities

(what you/students will do) (why you will do them)

 Students will work together to set the  Testing their ability to set time and read
time on their analog clocks from the time by having them set the clock and by
time I’ve given them them telling me what time it is
 Students will tell me what time it is on  Helps students understand the difference
my analog clock between am and pm
 Go over different assignments and ask
students if this activity is done in am or
pm

Closure/reminders

Talk to students about what kinds of clocks they have at home and challenging them to read off of
their analog clock if applicable, if not then to do it in class. Have them talk about their favorite thing
to do in the am and in the pm.

Assessment
(how you will know students met the objectives - include rubrics)
Give both of these worksheets to students (down below). Allow them to complete the worksheets
on their own. Answer questions along the way and check for understandings.

Checklist:
All questions should be answered clearly
1st worksheet
 Should have am or pm circled from questions 1-5
 Questions 6&7 have a wide range of answers but must be during the right time of the
day
 The last question is a rough estimate, must make sense and be around 6-8 am
2nd worksheet
 Must be able to read the analog clock
 Match up each analog clock to the correct digital clock
Answer Sheet

Accommodations/differentiation

If students finish early, they can create and answer their own questions

Help students by reading and explaining the questions

Reflection/evaluation
(after lesson is taught put your reflections here)

If students take longer to understand analog clocks, take the time to explain until everyone
understands

If students need more help with am and pm explain that a comes first in the alphabet so am comes
first which is the morning, while p comes after so it’s later in the day.
