ECOSYSTEM

ECOSYSTEM
• The term ecosystem was coined in 1935.
• “Eco” comes from the word ecology which
means anything having to do with environment.
• “System” comes from the Greek word systema
or “organised body, whole”
WHAT IS A ECOSYSTEM?
❖An ecosystem is a large
community of living
organisms (plants, animals
and microbes) in a particular
area.
❖Ecosystems are of any size
but usually they are in
particular places.
COMPONENTS OF ECOSYSTEM

CONSUMERS CONSUMERS CONSUMERS
BIOTIC COMPONENTS
Biotic components can be
described as any living
component that affects
another organism or shapes
the ecosystem.
This includes both animals
that consume other organisms
within their ecosystem.
ABIOTIC COMPONENTS
Abiotic components are
non living chemical and
physical parts of the
environment that affect
living organisms and the
functioning of ecosystem.
NATURAL ECOSYSTEM
• Natural ecosystem is a
community of living and non
living organisms, where each
component interacts together
as a unit through biological,
physical and chemical
processes.
• It consists of aquatic and
terrestrial ecosystem.
AQUATIC ECOSYSTEM
• An aquatic ecosystem is a
ecosystem in a body of water.
• Communities of organisms
are dependent on each other
on their environment.
• Aquatic ecosystems are of
two types- marine ecosystem
and freshwater ecosystem.
MARINE ECOSYSTEM
Marine ecosystem are
the largest of earth’s
aquatic ecosystems and
are distinguished by
waters that have high
salt content.
FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEM
• Freshwater ecosystems are a
subset of earth’s aquatic
ecosystems.
• They include lakes and
ponds, rivers, streams,
springs, bogs and wetlands.
• They have low salt content.
TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEM
• Terrestrial ecosystem is a type of
ecosystem found only on
landforms.
• A community of organisms and
their environment that occurs on
the land masses of continents and
islands.
• Example: Tundra, Tuforest,
Tropical rainforest, Grassland and
deserts.
FOREST ECOSYSTEM
A forest ecosystem is a natural
woodland unit consisting of all
plants, animals and micro-
organisms(biotic
components)in that area
functioning together with all of
the non living physical
(abiotic) factors of the
environment.
DESERT ECOSYSTEM
• A desert ecosystem is
defined by interactions
between organism
populations , the climate
in which they live, and
any other non living
influences on the habitat.
GRASSLAND ECOSYSTEM
• Grasslands are areas where the
vegetation is dominated by
grasses; however, sedge and rush
families can also be found along
with variable proportions of
legumes, like clover, and other
herbs.
• Grasslands naturally occur on all
continents except Antarctica.
MOUNTAIN ECOSYSTEM
• Mountain ecosystem
refers to any ecosystem
found in mountains.
• These ecosystems are
strongly affected by
climate, which gets colder
as elevation increases.
CURRENT ECOSYSTEM
• Current position of ecosystem has
become worse due climate change and
natural calamities as recently floods
which took place in many states,
drought, mining, overexploitation in
fishing, farming, chemical spills.
• The major reason behind ecosystem
being destroyed is pollution in the
environment may it be water pollution
which damages aquatic ecosystem or air
pollution that damages terrestrial
ecosystem.
When you saves water,
it saves you back,
When you refuse to
reuse,
It’s the earth you abuse
Save the ecosystem,
We have nowhere else
to go
