The supernatural plays an important role in Macbeth.

To what extent does it motivate Macbeth’s

actions?

The supernatural comes to play throughout Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’ to great impact. The play
bring forth horror, tension and suspense from the opening to the end of the play. Macbeth was a
very noble and brave man who had directed the army of King Duncan. This essay will discuss how
the use of supernatural, the effects of the witches and as well as Macbeth’s desire, has led Macbeth
to become a darker and eviller person.

The three witches is considered to be one of the main supernatural forces. They are considered to
be one of the main supernatural forces is because the witches have shaped how Macbeth made his
decisions and contributed crucially to his ultimate downfall. By default, the three witches are makes
of chaos. They join and obey evil spirits, and are followers of the evil goddess, Hecate. The witches
tried to create mayhem by prophesying to Macbeth, “ All Hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of
Glamis. All Hail Macbeth! Hail to thee, thane of Cawdor. All Hail Macbeth, that shalt be king
hereafter” , so that he could act. They plant the seed of evil in the head of Macbeth, which grew to
consume his mind. The witches gave Macbeth prophecies that have shaped Macbeth’s downfall.

Macbeth has his first weird supernatural encounter when he faces the three witches in Act 1 Scene
3. After learning that he’ll becoming king of his prophecies, Macbeth says, “Glamis & Cawdor’s
Thane: the greatest is behind.” Shakespeare uses Foreshadowing, to suggest the character Macbeth
will undergo a change in character. Macbeth furthermore suggests by this remark his first thought of
planning an evil scheme. After the witches’ prophecies have revealed Macbeth’s destiny, his next
triumph will be the search for the throne. By giving the concept of power to Macbeth, the witches
drive Macbeth to the next level of greed and evil which didn’t exist before the encounter.

King Duncan’s murder initiates a second confrontation between Macbeth and the supernatural as he
sees a floating dagger. As Macbeth awaits the signal to climb up the stairs, he sees the dagger
floating and declares, “ Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to
sight, or art thou but a dagger of the mind, a false creation, proceeding from the heat-oppressed
brain?” Macbeth is puzzled and frightened by the appearance. He doesn’t understand how he can
see anything and not touch it. “Thou leads me the way I was going ; & such an instrument I was to
use. And on my blade & hilt of blood which was not so before. There’s no such thing. It’s bloody
business which takes shape.” Macbeth starts wondering whether his minds playing tricks on him.
The circumstances seem to be very coincidental given that he is moments away from the murdering
a man with a similar weapon. The dagger symbolizes Macbeth’s point of no return. If he chooses the
direction the dagger leads in, there’s no going back.

In the view of the fact that the prophecies stated that Banquo’s descendants will be kings, “Lesser
than Macbeth & greater. Not so happy, yet much happier. Thou shalt get kings, though thou be
none,” Macbeth fears Banquo & goes into plot the murder of his best friend, which spurs yet
another brush with the supernatural. Macbeth attends a dinner, in which he sees his deceased best
friends’ ghost. The fortunes of the three witches sparked Macbeth’s urges to kill Banquo, this led
him to a deeper pit. “What man dare, I dare, Approach thou like the rugged Russian bear, the armed
rhinoceros, or th’ Hyrcan tiger; Take any shape but that & my firm nerves shall never tremble.” After
his encounter with the spirit, Macbeth decides to visit the witches one more times to guarantee his
well-being. After his last visit, Macbeth becomes overconfident and a tyrant which causes his
downfall.
All things considered, the play ‘Macbeth’, using the supernatural provides the suspenseful essence
of his work. It was the influence of the witches, the supernatural and as wells as Macbeth’s desire
that motivated him into murdering King Duncan and Banquo. This has led Macbeth to become a
darker and more evil person with every spiritual experience.
