GEC 110- GENDER AN SOCIETY

Name: Christian Anthony B. Anog

Course and Year: BSEDE-2

Directions: Read the case and reflect on the succeeding questions.

In a very traditional and patriarchal family, the father of a 19-year old girl tells her that he has
arranged for her to marry a certain man. The girl does not know the man very well. The man is
much older than she is but she agrees to the marriage. (15 pts)

1. Did the girl give her informed consent to this marriage? Why?

Based on my understanding on the statement above, I think that the girl gave her
informed consent to this marriage. I think it is because she agrees to it in the first place
even though the man is much older than her and don’t know him well. Second, she is
aware upon marrying the man and I think that she might thought that sooner, she may
eventually learn to love the man and live happily as couple in the family.

2. Was there any force used in the incident? Why?

For this, I think that there was force used for maybe the father threat the girl if she
will not marry the man and might be renounced in the family. As a responsible and
loving daughter to her father, she honors her father’s decision upon marrying the man.

3. What kind of power does the father have? Why?

The power of the father was obviously patriarchy. The father as the head of the
family rules or governs his family members. For me, I felt sad/sorry about the father
having that kind of power for eventually he will make poor decisions for his family.

Camille wants to be an accountant in a big company where her Dad wants her to work with.
She’s now happy and satisfied to finally live her dreams. (15 pts)

1. Did the girl give her informed consent to let the father decide on her profession?

Upon the situation, I think that the girl did not gave her informed consent to let
her father decide on her profession. The father here supported for whatever her daughter
wished to work with. I think that the father knew her daughter really well that he was
connected to her decision.
2. Was there any force used in the incident? Why?

There’s obviously no used of any force in this scenario. I’m glad that the father
just let her daughter became independent to her decisions in life and make her feel loved
and cared.

3. What kind of power does the father have? Why?

For this question, I may not be able to think of possible power that the father must
have for he just promotes fairness and was not strict to his family members. He is an
epitome of all fathers that should be emulated.
