Public Policy Report

Neelaksh Bhan – S193F0021

Our respected Dr. K Valentina Invited a couple of great minds to take some of their precious time
and enlighten us upon a few topics of concern in our country.

The first guest speaker Mr. Nanhe Lal has been continuously working for the best interest of the
disabled section of the society. His ideology and his actions towards the disabled people are
initiatives that would compel the government to undertake certain policy-oriented measures to get
the best for these people. The key learnings from his lecture was the lack of government concern
regarding the said issue and the lack of actions on the governments part in-spite of there being quite
a few laws and regulations to regulate the best interest of the said part of the public. Mr. Nanhe lal
has made sure that his peers ensure that instead of letting the disabled get into the grabs of the ill
evils of begging and other lest activities rather they can be given a new set of motives such as
running a shop to earn for themselves and get better. The Best part of the lecture was the energy
that Mr. Nanhe lal brought in with him. His energy showed the motivation in him that took his
efforts for his society to the next level.

The second guest speaker Mr. Ajit Singh talked about the reality of the media in our country. He
mentioned that media when introduced in India was in form of print media and only showed
opinions of great minds of India and contained less of news articles. He emphasized on the fact that
the history of media has played an important role in making media an essential part of the society. It
is considered to be the fourth pillar of the Indian governance system that keeps a check on the other
organs of the Indian polity. On the other hand, he emphasized on the fact that the reality is way too
different and that instead of working as an over viewer on the judiciary of the country it acts as a
influencer of the public. The reality is in way too different from what is expected out of the media.
He also talked about the ill effects that the social media has had on the public. Where the media is
supposed to equally treat all the crimes equally, it rather treats them unequally. Where recently the
Rape incident that happened in Hyderabad was highlighted so much the Unnao rape incident was
forgotten and not talked about in the media itself. The key take away from the guest lecture was the
realization of the true picture of the scenario that the media is creating among the public and not
showing the real picture to the public. The media has had the power of showing the true image to
the people but the power since remains with the top person who own the media businesses do not
use this power wisely. They show what should be shown and not what is needed to be shown to the
public.

Conclusively the both the guest speakers talked about essential issues in our country that prevails in-
spite of having a huge amount of regulations and laws to regulate these issues. Thus more needs to
be done on part of the government to fix the said issues.
