(An Autonomous Institute)
Third Year B Tech. Civil Engineering SEMESTER – VI
Foundation Engineering (CE 3041)
Day & Date: Time:
Max Marks: 40
Instructions: 1. All questions are compulsory.
2. If required assume suitable data.
3. As per requirement of students, provide the graphs.

Q.2 (a) Determine the ultimate bearing capacity of strip footing, 1.5m wide with 8 CO2
its base at a depth of 1m, if the ground water table is located
(a) At a depth of 0.5m below ground surface.
(b) At a depth of 0.5m below the base of the footing.
ϓd= 17kN/m3, ϓsat = 20 kN/m3, ϕ=380, C=0, Nc=45, Nq=60, Nr=75.

Q.3 (a) Describe the various causes of negative skin friction? How it can be 8 CO5
Estimated.
OR
(a) Describe in detail under reamed pile with respect to their needs and 8 CO5
precautions.
(b) In a two layered cohesive soil, bored piles of 400 mm are installed. The top 8 CO5
layer has a thickness of 5m and the bottom layer is of considerable depth.
The shear strength of the top clay layer is 45kN/m 2 and that of the bottom
is 100 kN/m2. Determine the length of the bored pile required to carry a
safe load of 380 kN, allowing a factor of safety of 2.

Q.4 (a) Illustrate the procedure for determining the factor of safety of a given slope 8 CO6
by friction circle method.
OR
(a) Explain the different types of slope failures? Discuss the various methods 8 CO6
for improving the stability of slopes.

(b) A canal is having side slopes 1:1 is proposed to be constructed in a 8 CO6

cohesive soil to a depth of 5m below ground surface. The soil properties
are given below,
Φu = 150, Cu = 12kN/m2, e = 1, Gs = 2.65.
Calculate the factor of safety w. r. t. cohesion against failure of the bank
slopes.
a) When the canal is full of water Sn=0.08.
b) When there is a sudden drawdown of water in the canal Sn=0.126.
