A Narrative Report on
Streamlining the K-12 Curriculum: An Approach to Determining Which Standards and
Competencies to Teach (Araling Panlipunan and Values Education)

Date: June 8, 2020 and June 11, 2020

Lecturer: Mr. Angelo C. Espiritu – Araling Panlipunan ; Ms. Reina B. Jara - ValuesEducation

A significant word from the webinar made me reflect on how I perceive things in my life, my
social relationships and my career. The word is ENDURANCE. Thus, this webinar explained all the
things we have to endure for us to still give our pupils and students a worthwhile academic
experience despite everything that is happening. As educational institutions are coping up with the
new normal, as educators, we have a responsibility to adjust our ways of teaching to familiarizing
ourselves on how to maximize technology, challenges on how we can continue giving quality
education and answer one of this webinar’s question “How can ESC Schools prepare a curriculum
map that covers the K-12 Standard Competencies in the ‘new normal’ and meets
recertification requirements”

At the start of the webinar, the speaker introduced to us what we have to expect in today’s
“new normal” way of education: a) having shortened school calendar b) varied instruction modalities
c) limited to no face to face contact with our students c) reduced class time and d) frequent disruptors
that we cannot control, here comes the word called endurance which was considered the primary
determining factor for us to make our new normal classes still an attainable one. We should start
asking ourselves, can we endure this kind of new normal? ”

curriculum guide and/or DepEd MELCs
and PEAC certification assessment
instrument. The speaker highlighted
that MELCS (Most Essential Learning
Competencies) was not made to
replace Curriculum Guides but instead
we can use it as our basis in making
our Curriculum guides.

We were also introduced to the Sample

Diary Curriculum Map, that was divided
to 4 parts, which lead us to another big
word “ALIGNMENT”, as educators, we
really need to make things aligned
especially in all our lessons before
sharing it to our students, we were
reminded by the speaker about the difference of content standards curriculum and performance
standards curriculum, where content standards cover a specific scope of sequential topics, identify
and set the essential knowledge and understanding that must be learned, while on the other hand,
performance standards describe the abilities and skills that the learners are expected to demonstrate
to relation to the content standards. In other words, these two standards are made as guide to which
among learning competencies (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) students need to have and obtain at
the end of each classes.

The speaker also reminded as that we should not just put any activities that we can think of
just to comply and have activities, and it doesn’t mean that since time and days will be limited at
some point, we will give and burden to our students with a lot of activities just to cover those
limitations and made us to be always aware of the characteristics of an Essential Learning
Competency, that it should be aligned, connects, is applicable, and for students to have competence
above many others.

The R.E.A.L criteria approach was also given for us to have basis in knowing what we should
consider or prioritize. R for Readiness, this standard gives us an idea about the essential knowledge
and skills that are necessary for the success in the next class, course or grade level. E for
Endurance, this give us an idea with knowledge and skills that are useful beyond single study. A for
Assessed, by it’s word alone, it will make us assess upcoming exams to see how helpful those
instruments were. L for Leverage, this approach will provide students with knowledge and skills that
will be helpful in values identifying value in multiple disciplines.

Another topic that was given is all about “Streamlining the Teaching and Learning of the
K12 Curriculum” that came from the word STREAMLINE which means “path traced by a particle
moving with the flow”. The speaker also explains to us the difference between laminar flow and
turbulent flow and relate it on how we should come up with our lesson guides. It was explained
scientifically that in laminar flow, fluid particles follow a smooth path in layers and that with each layer
moving parallel to each other without mixing, while on the other hand, Turbulent flow is where fluid
moves in a rough path and there are cross-currents and mixing of layers. With this, we as educators
relate streamlining as making our classes move through smooth paths and students will move in a
parallel movement with mixing the things they have to learn from things that is not helpful in any way.
It was made clear as well that
streamlining or going smoothly in
preparing our lessons could help us
give clarity, efficiency, skill in
focusing, whole sills development
and more evidence of learning to
our students.

mostly of techniques on how to
teach AralPan is through story
telling on what happened in a
certain event, in pointing out in a
map where can we find a certain
place in the map, and letting
students master what happen in a
certain historical day, I asked myself, how will my students love AralPan without thinking that they just
have to memorize, point and get to know a certain AralPan event a meaningful one and where they
can tell someday, “Yes, my teacher taught me how to deal with this in our Araling Panlipunan subject”
from the facr that they are now part of a certain phenomenon, where children at their age after 20-25
years after will study in their Araling Panlipunan subject in school and lastly, how can I make a great
impact to my students using the objectives my subject is needing.

Same as with Values Education, using this subject field, how can I still make a difference to my
students and help them be a person of values and be a better person that they always wanted.
Knowing that this is one of the subjects they can bring until thy finished studying, with the ways
DepEd gave us to cope with the “new normal”, these children can always remember how this global
concern made them to what they will be, through aligning my lesson guides to assist the students
understand well the world where they are living.
