Interview Guide:

For Nurses/Others who administer injections

1. On average, how many syringes are used in your hospital/clinic/laboratory in a


day?
50-60 syringes on an average are used in a day
2. What percentage of doctors administers injections/aspirations? Or is it nurses who
mostly administer them?
Nurses / senior Nurse administrator them
3. Do the patients coming to you for injections seem to be aware of the safe disposal
practices of used syringes? Or are they ignorant? Do they raise any concerns
regarding the safe disposal of syringes, during or after injections?
Yes the patient are very much aware, No such questions are raised regarding safe
disposal.
4. What percentage of your patients agrees to administer multiple injections on them
using the same syringe? Do you get such patients often?
No patients prefer multiple injections using same syringe. We never does also.
5. Do you prefer to use prefilled syringes? Are prefilled syringes commonly
available, or is it restricted to certain diseases?
Prefilled syringes are restricted to certain diseases, These are commonly used in
case of Vaccinations.
6. What is the needle disposal protocol in your hospital/clinic? Is there a culture of
not compromising syringe safety in your hospital/clinic/laboratory?
We follow Bio Medical waste management practices. Needle disposal are done as
per the mentioned process.
7. Are used syringes disposed following standard protocols? How often are the
disposed syringes and needles bags taken out from the hospital/clinic/laboratory
for final disposal? What is the procedure adopted for this final disposal?
Final disposal from clinic / laboratory is done once in two days. These are
collected from clinics by outsourced / contracted agency and are disposed by them
finally according to the category of waste.

8. Does the facility where injections are given meet the requirements for syringe and
needle destruction before the final disposal?
Yes we do follow or are aware of the Protocol to be followed in needle disposal,
we do have multiple colored waste bins to dispose the used syringes separately.
Like needles are disposed to one and the plastic or glass body is disposed into
another one. This helps to segregate the waste in final disposal.
9. Are you aware of the dangers of unsafe disposal of syringes? What training is
offered by authorities for the safe disposal of used syringes?
Yes we are aware of this and the Injections are given as per the safe practices
only. And in disposal we follow Bio Medical waste Management process.
10. Have you ever tried to identify the unsafe practices (if any) of syringe disposal in
your hospital/clinic/laboratory, which might lead to infections? What are they?
We rarely notice such instances. This happens if nurses disposes the syringes in
wrong waste bins. These are noticed from un-trained or newly appointed
nurse’s .Could not notice any unhygienic practices while taking injections.
11. Could you please name some diseases that can be transmitted through unsafe
injection practices such as the reuse of syringes and needles?
Mainly it is HIV & Hepatitis.
12. Do you find single-use disposable (Auto-Destructive) syringes easy to use? Do
you face any disposability issues while discarding them?
These syringes are very useful but gets stuck in the usage while loading the
medicine.
13. Are there any syringe safety awareness messages displayed in the room where
injections/aspirations are administered in your hospital/clinic/laboratory?
Yes.
14. Is there a difference in the usage pattern of syringes between hospitals, clinics and
medical laboratories?
Yes. Mostly small clinics lacks these standard practices , this might be due to lack
of qualified nurses , availability of instruments , space constraints and many other
issues related to budget constraints to follow the safe disposal practices. There are
more followed in hospitals and laboratories, as they meet the medical standards in
all aspects. Here we follow and practice as per the protocol.
