PAT GERARD
CHAIR

July 24, 2020

Governor Ron DeSantis
The Capitol
400 S. Monroe St.
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0001

Dear Governor DeSantis:

On behalf of the Pinellas County Commissioners, I am writing to ask for your help. As you know, our local
hospitals are in desperate need for more of the lifesaving drug Remdesivir. We appreciate your recent efforts
to procure 30,000 vials for Florida and your efforts to obtain another 11,000 to assist our hospitals. At our last
Board of County Commissioners meeting, our Pinellas County hospital leaders indicated how helpful the use of
this drug has been but also how difficult it has been to obtain sufficient quantities.

Pinellas currently has 364 deaths due to Covid, 65% of which have occurred in the last 4 weeks, which is a
huge concern. We currently have 67 patients on ventilators and 106 patients in the ICU both specifically due to
Covid. These numbers continue to trend up. We also have a much older population than other counties. With
over 250 long term care facilities and over 13,000 residents, the impact on our senior population is significant.
Our medical professionals are doing all they can including using convalescent plasma but advise the demand
for Remdesivir is high.

We can not stress enough the need for Remdesivir. We recently had one of our own Pinellas County doctors
who needed Remdesivir, but the hospital ran out. It was a challenge to obtain the drug for him from a sister
hospital. Our staff meets with hospital leadership several times per week. They continue to advise that the
shortage of Remdesivir along with the lack of medical personnel has created life and safety issues during this
pandemic.

The challenges this pandemic presents is stressful for everyone and I do appreciate the challenges to meet
everyone’s needs. I also want to express our spincere thank you for the testing site the State assisted with in St.
Petersburg. Any assistance you could provide in supporting our local hospitals with Remdesivir would be
appreciated and will save lives.

Sincerely,

Patricia S. Gerard, Chair
