PART THREE: READING

Exercise 8: Read the passage below and choose the correct answer for each question.

Many classrooms today have computers in them. However, there are usually not enough for each
student to use one at the same time. Computers cost a lot and also use space in small classrooms.
Laptop computers are more convenient because they need less space, and they can be carried or
moved easily. However, most schools still cannot afford enough for all of the students to have one.

Since the development of the first computer, these machines have continued to become smaller,
lighter, and cheaper. These days there are cheaper development of these handheld devices is allowing
more schools to bring technology into classrooms.

Some of the first handheld devices were called PDAs, personal digital assistants. They were used to
help people in business stay organized. They could make lists of things to do each day, store important
phone numbers, and even make files for work. Now we have smart phones and small tablet computers.
The latest devices have come a long way did and more! They can access the Internet, play games, and
run useful programs for example, those that help in science experiments.

Because handheld devices are relatively cheap, schools can afford to buy more of them. In some
schools, students pay a deposit at the beginning of the year for a handheld device. Since the students
paid a deposit, they tend to take better care of the device over the year. The students can get the
deposit back at the end of the year if they return the device in good condition. Or, students can just pay
a little more money to keep it at the end of the year.

In the future, schools might be able to afford computers or laptops for every student. Until then,
handheld devices are turning out to be good things to use instead.
