Educational Philosophy Kelsie Adams

My goal is to provide my diverse groups of students with an individualized education that is suited to
their varying needs. My philosophy is student-focused, with consideration to real world relevance and
preparation for the future. I affirm that the true purpose of education is to equip my students for academic
success, responsible citizenship, and sound character.

As a teacher, my role is not to solely educate the mind, but the heart as well. I promote the importance
of integrity. Throughout the year, I demonstrate necessary life skills, such as how to resolve conflict
appropriately, how to be a leader, how to always treat others with kindness, how to show respect, how to work
as a team, and how to persevere when challenges arise. I encourage my students to discover their role in
society, to question the world around them, and to take learning into their own hands.

In the classroom, I am a facilitator. I provide necessary information, but I am not the primary source of
information. I strive to spark a love for learning and thirst for knowledge in my students, as they search to find
the answers to their own questions. Students need the opportunity to discover knowledge for themselves,
authentically. I foster active learning and invite student led discussion and input. I take the time to discuss the
“why” questions and allow students to attempt to find their own answers. I relate content to the real world as
much as possible to provide students with a true purpose for what they are learning.

To guide my students in achieving these goals, I use a variety of pedagogical methods grounded in my
beliefs about teaching, learning, and literacy. My method of teaching is flexible and is not formulaic. I aim to
adjust my lessons and classroom environment to cater to the diverse needs of each student. Every student
learns in a unique way and each have multiple areas of intelligence that require different conditions to best
understand information. I am purposeful to differentiate my instruction and activities to meet students at their
current level. My education and experience working with diverse groups of students has allowed me to enrich
my students in many ways, but especially in the foundation of literacy and a life-long love of learning. I
encourage my students to not only focus on growing their ability to read and write, but also to begin reading
and writing as a process for learning. Students should be thinking critically about what they read, and be able
to form their own opinions based in sound logic. I love teaching in the English Language Arts & Reading
department because the foundation is literacy and is such an essential piece of student success in the real
world.
I believe student success can be accomplished by building strong relationships with not only the
students, but also with their parents, the community, the administration, and other support staff, whom will
also contribute to creating a school environment of which children are excited to be a part. I believe my ability
to provide a comfortable, safe, creative, and structured classroom environment has allowed my students the
freedom to make mistakes, ask questions, and learn from others. Students will understand that respect for
others is nonnegotiable. Each student should feel safe, cared for, valued, respected, and allowed to voice
opinions and beliefs without the fear of failure. In my classroom, I cultivate a culture of character that guides
students to being capable, compassionate people.

In sum, I am an educator that genuinely considers the overall well-being of my students and their
families. My main goal as a teacher is for my students to leave my classroom knowing they are cared for, that
they matter, and with the necessary skills to help them achieve their goals. I aspire to nurture the importance
of positive character, reading actively, and writing reflectively. There is no better way to show students the
importance of these qualities than to exhibit them myself. I am determined to continue to grow in a profession
that I love, and in which I feel called to be a part. I strive to serve my students, my colleagues, my school, and
my community in my role as an educator. It is a privilege and an honor to prepare the future generations to go
out and change the world.
