to complete the information.
Respiration is the process of
converting oxygen and
carbohydrates into carbon dioxide
and water, releasing energy. The oxygen gets into our system when we
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ in and out. When you breathe in, the lungs take in fresh _ _ _ _ _ _.
When you breathe out, _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and other waste gases are
given out.
To breathe in, or inhale, the intercostal muscles of the ribcage cause it to
_ _ _ _ _ _ and the diaphragm tightens and flattens. This sucks air into
the _ _ _ _ _. To breathe out, or exhale, the intercostal muscles and the
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ relax, pushing the air out.
When you _ _ _ _ _ _ , the air travels in through the nose and _ _ _ _ _, past
the _ _ _ _ _ _ (voice box), and into the trachea ( _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _). The
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ then branches into bronchi which lead to each _ _ _ _. The bronchi
branch into bronchioles then end in the air sacs called alveoli.
Tiny blood vessels called capillaries surround the alveoli, delivering carbon
dioxide and other wastes to be _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and picking up oxygen to be carried
around the rest of the _ _ _ _.
We don’t often think very much about the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ system, but
sometimes a cough, sneeze or hiccup reminds us about it. A _ _ _ _ _ is your
body’s way of clearing the airway, an irritation in the upper airway causes us to
_ _ _ _ _ _ and _ _ _ _ _ _ _ are caused by a spasm of the diaphragm.
