    POETRY PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT

    Resources: Literature book, paper, pencil, pen, dictionary, thesaurus, poems as models, Internet,
    word processing program or electronic presentation program

    Essential Question(s):
    1. Why read poetry?
    2. What techniques do good poems use?
    3. How do effective poets use grammar and mechanics?
    4. What are certain elements of a poem?
    5. How does poetry relate to the human experience?

    Goal
    In order to further understand poetry, you will need to experience the process of analyzing poetry.
    You will create a collection of reflections on famous poetry, provide information on a famous poet,
    and write your own poetry.

    Audience
    Your teacher and peers

    Situation
    In this task you will be researching, reading, analyzing, writing, responding to, memorizing,
    discussing, and collecting poetry.

    Product Performance and Purpose


    Your grade will be based on the following:
    1. Either in a poetry book or electronic presentation: the poetry collection and your reflections/analysis
    2. Oral Presentation of your work.

    Standards and Criteria for Success


    1. It is important that you keep all of your work neat and organized, along with having your
    materials in class.
    2. Your work should:
    *Be accessible on either Office 365 or Google docs
    *Be neat, attractive, and inviting to an audience
    *Be organized, and work should be kept together in a specific place (either electronically or in a
    folder).

    PROCEDURE: Typed or Electronically


    1. Create a title page, table of contents, introduction page (background on your poet), printed or
    drawn illustrations, and put them together in a book or electronic program for presenting.
    2. Write reflections of 5 poems. Each reflection should be a paragraph of at least 100 words. The
    paragraph should explain the poetic elements of form, theme, and figurative language. Use poetry
    terms in your explanations. Include a bibliography page (resources).
    *Do not include Shel Silverstein or Dr. Seuss in your choices.
    *You may not use poems that we have discussed in class.
    Follow the example below:

    The poem “________” by Author is a narrative poem with three stanzas. The poet used rhyme,
    repetition, and alliteration, which creates a pleasing rhythm. For example, the rhyme scheme was
    AAB and specifically the words rain and pane, snails and tails, and spice and nice rhyme. The
    repetition occurs in the last line of each stanza stating what each noun is made of. Author’s use of
    alliteration was roses and rain, snakes and snails, and sugar and spice. Imagery of roses, rain, and
    beads made me picture looking out my window during a morning sprinkle in spring. The overall
    theme of the poem was…... This was obvious when the poet states, “………………..” (line 2) and
    “…………………” (line 5) because those who enjoy nature …………… Others will agree from
    “………….” (line 8) which means …………………………….. I personally connect to this as a young
    teen who also …………………………………….. It also teaches those who haven’t ………….. to …..
