1.0. INTRODUCTION
Examinations play an important role at all levels of education in the Zambian education system.
Grade 9 examinations are among the most important in the formation of one’s future in terms of
education and career choices. For this reason, if one is to be successful in these examinations,
adequate preparation is of importance. Preparation is reflected in the results of the examination.
Very often the results of these examinations are a reflection of the quality of teaching, (Farrant,
1980). The proposed research therefore aims to look at the challenges that teachers face in
preparation for grade 9 examinations in four selected school in Masaiti District. Parents, when
choosing schools for their children usually consider the past pass rates of the prospective school.
Some schools are on high demand because they had a high pass rate in past examinations. While
the teachers or the entire school get the credit, one wonders what causes other schools to have a
low pass rate. What could it be that causes the poor pass rate in some of these schools?

1.1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Teachers face a lot challenges in preparation for final examinations at Grade 9. These challenges
affect the performance of the learners in Masaiti District hence the need for the researcher to
investigate these challenges.

1.2. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

for final examinations at Grade 9. The focus will be on the teachers well as the school leavers
who had previously gone to school within Masaiti District.

iii. What are the possible measures the government should take in order to solve the
problems faced by teachers in preparing their learners for Grade 9 final examinations?

1.4. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study may give interested parties an insight of what difficulties teachers encounter in
preparation for examinations at Grade 9. Therefore, if measures are to be taken, the proposed
study may give basic guidelines as to which problems really affect teachers in relation to learner’s
examinations.

1.5. LIMITATION OF STUDY

Due to financial and time limitation, this study will not cover all the schools in the country.
Therefore, the results of this research paper should not be generalized to other districts, but must
be specific to four (4) selected school in Masaiti District. The area to be sampled is only Masaiti
District due to the time factor as well as logistic costs such as transportation as this is not a
sponsored research.

1.6. DEFINITION OF TERMS

Learners- a person who is taught by another, especially a schoolchild or student in
relation to a teacher.

Teacher- The person who guides or facilitates the learners in their finding out more
