THE EFFECTS OF SELF- LEARNING KIT IN

THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE


GRADE 9 LEARNERS IN QUANTUM
MECHANICAL MODEL OF ATOM
Introduction
As Mark Twain once remarked, “The Best Education Happens
outside the Classroom” which means that self-learning that takes place
outside the formal channels can be both informative as well as
educational. To explain, self-learning ensures that learners learn outside
the formal systems thereby giving them more flexibility and freedom to
explore new avenues of learning. It is common knowledge that
education is the key to become productive citizens in our country so
that most, if not all, of the parents are working hard to earn money just
to sustain the needs of their children.
With the current situation right now brought by the COVID-10
pandemic, the sector of education has been greatly affected. The
lockdowns in response to COVID-19 have interrupted conventional
schooling with nationwide school closures for months. While the
educational sector has made numerous efforts to maintain learning
continuity during this period, learners have had to rely more on their
own resources to continue learning remotely through the Internet,
television, or radio. Teachers also had to adapt to new pedagogical
concepts and modes of delivery of teaching, for which they may not
have been trained. Learners in the most marginalized groups, who do
not have access to digital learning resources or lack the resilience and
engagement to learn on their own, are at risk of falling behind
(Schleicher, 2020).
Part of our role as teachers is developing our students’ love for learning.
Thus, the Department of Education has put an effort to make ends meet just the
assure the continuity of education of our learners. The production of self-
learning kits is one of the major means of the Department of Education in
realizing the vision of the department to make education goes on. This kit
consists of systematic sequenced materials for learning. Self-Learning Kits may
prove to be a boon for students due to their enriched features. They perform the
role of an efficient teacher. Students become independent thinkers and learn to
accept responsibility. Self-learning kit give the opportunity to develop a good
work ethic. In other words, self-learning is neither location constrained nor time
bound. Indeed, the fact that self-learning can take place from the comfort of
anywhere as well as the luxury of any time means that it is quite valuable for
those who are location or time constrained (Sarmiento, 2020).
In the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur, the
adaption of the Basic Education Learning
Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) took place. All schools
contributed their time and knowledge in creating
localized self- learning kits for learners. This is
something new for everyone that is why the
conduct of this research is important to gather data
that can be used to improve the quality of the self-
learning kits being produced.
Since successful achievement in the BE-LCP is one of
the most important concern of education in this time of the
new normal, this study therefore addressed itself in the
analysis of the effects of self- learning kit in the academic
performance of the grade 9 learners in quantum mechanical
model of atom. By analyzing the success of the use of the
self- learning kit, teachers would have a better insight in the
possible solutions to problems that the students encounter in
learning.
The importance of this study lies in its possible use by
the education sector in planning programs for the
improvement of the learning conditions of the learners in all
subject areas. The result of this study will be of great help
not only to educators but also to the parents and
stakeholders. It will give them idea on how to assist the
education sector in their programs especially in this time of
the new normal.
Thus, the results of this study will serve as a baseline
data for a program of action.
Literature Review
Schools are limited to face-to-face learning to ensure social distancing and
decrease the volume of people outside the home at any given time. This is a big
challenge as the traditional face-to-face learning in the classroom would not be
done.
Before, the learners and the teacher are both physically present in the
classroom, and there are opportunities for active engagement, immediate
feedback, and socio-emotional development of learners. Now, it is not possible in
moderate and high-risk areas except in low-risk areas such as the geographically
isolated, disadvantaged, and conflict affected areas with no history of infection
and very low and easily monitored external contacts, but with teachers and
learners living in the vicinity of the school (Dantic, 2020).
New Normal Education in the Philippines.
Learning in the new normal is a challenge for the
teachers, students and even parents. After
postponing the opening of classes last August 24,
DepEd confirmed that they are ready for October’s
opening of classes, for the school year 2020 to 2021,
through blended learning approaches after reaching
more than 23 million enrollees.
Blended learning is a combination of both online and
offline learning methodologies with the use of technology.
Online is when the student’s study with their teacher and
classmates through an application that uses a webcam while
offline is when the teacher provides the students with the
lesson, seatwork, or assignment that they can finish at their
own pace, within the deadline.
This new way of learning brought by COVID-19
pandemic can be an additional challenge during this tough
time.
Self -Learning Kits. The Department of Education
provides and distributes self-learning kits to every student
every week through their respective schools. Learners will
have ample time to study and assess the modules before the
start of weekly class.
Students are expected to complete the task and submit
their outputs at the end of the week. Open communication
between the teacher to students and/or teacher to
parents/guardians is also part of the norm. This is to ensure
and monitor the progress of the students at home.
Research Questions
This study aims to find out the effectiveness of the teacher-made self-learning kit in the
academic performance of the Grade 9 learners in quantum mechanical model of atom.
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the validity of the self- learning kit to be used by the learners in terms of the
following factors:
a. Intellectual Property Rights Compliance;
b. Learning Competencies;
c. Instructional Design and Organization;
d. Instructional Quality;
e. Assessment; and
f. Readability?
2. What is the result of the Pre-test of the learners?
3. What is the result of the Post-test of the learners?
4. Is there a significant difference between the Pre-test and the Post-test?
Scope and delimitation
This research will be conducted at Solotsolot National High
School, 2nd grading period, School Year, 2020-2021. The
instrument of the study is the Teacher-made Self-learning kits in
Grade 9 specifically about quantum mechanical model of atom.
It is delimited to the following: The construction of the Self-
learning kits, testing if the constructed tool is effective in the
understanding of students in quantum mechanical model of atom
through pre-test and post-test.
Research Methodology

Sampling. The participants of this


study will be the Grade 9 students
enrolled in Solotsolot National High
School for the school year 2020-2021.
Data Collection. The self-learning kit to
be use will be validated by pool of experts
before using it to the participants. Likewise,
the 30-item questionnaire will be prepared by
the researchers and will also be validated by
Science teachers from other schools to test its
validity.
Data Analysis. The data of the
research will be subjected to descriptive
statistical analysis that will answer the
problems raised. Mean statistical tool
will also be used.
