Dear Miguel,

How are you? I’m fine. Here’s a letter in English. It’s good practice for you

and me!

I have classes in English at La Guardia Collage. I’m in a class with

eight students. They are all from different countries: Japan, Brazil, Switzerland

Poland and Italy. Our teaher’s name is Isabel. She is very nice and a very good

teacher.

I live an apartment with two American girls, Annie and Marnie Kass.

They are sisters. Annie is twenty years old and a dancer. Marnie is eighteen and

a student. They’re very friendly, but it isn’t easy to understand them. They speak

very fast!

New York is very big, very exciting, but very expensive! The subway isn’t

difficult to use and it’s cheap. It’s very cold now, but Central Park is lovely in the

snow. I’m very happy here.

Nick Jackson lives in a flat in the centre of Paris. He is an engineer and he Works for a very
big company there. He likes his job very much. He is single and he speaks English and French
quite well.

Every weekday he gets up at half past six and has breakfast. He has milk, an egg and toast
for breakfast. Then he leaves home and catches the 7: 30 train for work. He starts work at 9:
00 and finishes at 17: 00 every day. He returns home at about 18: 30. When he comes home,
he has a shower and then he prepares the meal. He has dinner at 20: 00. He likes watching
TV after dinner. He watches TV untill 22: 30. Then he brushes his teeth and goes to bed.

At weekends Nick gets up late because he doesn’t work. After breakfast, he usually goes
fishing on Saturdays. If he catches fish, he grills them for dinner. On Sundays he stays at
home and relaxes.

Tomiko is an accountant and works for a large company in London. She’s the
youngest of three children. Her parents live in Glasgow far from London.This Tomiko’s first

JENNY BROWN

Jenny Brown is 14 years old. She is a typical schoolgirl except for one thing – she is a
champion swimmer. Every day of the week from Monday to Saturday.

Jenny’s mother wakes her at 4.30 in the morning. She gets dressed, has breakfast and she
and her mother take the car and g oto the local swimming pool. At five o’clock she is in the
pool and she practices with her trainer Robert for two hours. Then from 7.15 to 8.15 she

William Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was born in Stratford on April 23rd, 1564. His father, John
Shakespeare, was an important man in the town – William did not come from a poor family.

When he was eighteen, William married Anne Hathaway in Stratford. But he didn’t
want to stay there. He wanted to be an actor and the best theatres were in London. So, in
1587, William went to London, where he worked as an actor in a theatre called The Rose.

He began to write plays for the actors. He wrote Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar,
Richard II, Cleopatra and many more. Everyone liked his plays, and he became famous.

When James I became King in 1603, Shakespeare worked for him, and performed his
plays for the King and his friends. He also worked at the Globe Theatre. This theatre
presented his last play, HENRY VIII. There was a gun in his play, and fire from the gun burned
the theatre down.

In 1610, Shakespeare went back to Stratford. He wanted tol ive there with his family,
he died on Apri 23rd, 1616. He was only 52 years old.

Alfred Hitchcock

Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born in London, on August 13, 1899. He went to school
and university there and in 1920 he started to work with a British film company. In 1920, he
also married Alma Revelle, his wife for the next sixty years. They had one daughter.

From 1925 to 1939 he made several films in Britain, including The 39 Steps and The
Man Who Knew Too Much.

In 1939, he left Britain because he wanted to work in Hollywood. He lived in Los


Angeles for the rest of his life and made many of his 53 films there. Alfred Hitchcock died in

D.H. Lawrence

D.H. Lawrence was an English writer. He was born in 1885, in England. He had two brothers

and two sisters. He lived in Nottingham and went to school there. He loved his mother very

much but she died in 1910, when Lawrence was 25. Lawrence married Frieda Van Richthofen

in 1914. They lived in England for a short time and later they moved to Germany. They
bought a house near Munich and stayed there for two years. He wrote many books. Sons
and Lovers (1913), The Rainbow (1915) and Women in Love (1920) are some of his famous
books. He died in 1930.

 The First Miss World

Read and answer the question.

The First Miss World

Alice Hyde is ninety-seven years ld and she always watches the Miss World competition on
TV. She likes to remember the year 1911, when she became the first Miss World. “ It was
wonderful. My Picture was in the best magazines and on postcards. I received hundreds of
letters. A lot of men wanted to marry me! Best of all, Charlie Chaplin wrote from America
and invited met o Hollywood. I really wanted to go there and be a film star, but my parents
said no.”

Instead, in 1912, Alice married Charlie Hyde, a boy from her town in the North of England.
They had five children, four sons and a daughter. When Charlie retired, they moved to Spain
and they lived there until Charlie died. Alice came back to England and bought a shop. She
worked there until last year. “ I had a wonderful life with Charlie. We travelled a lot. We
lived abroad. Charlie was my true love. My Charlie was the best husband in the world! I’m
stil healty and active. I feel much younger than ninety-seven. I do my exercise every day and
I’m going to Spain form y summer holiday!”
