USE CASES TO SHAPE YOUR
JOURNEY TO 5G SUCCESS
Introduction
5G changes the game for everyone. For consumers, 5G supports immersive experiences, higher mobile
data rates and Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity that will revolutionize their interactions with the
world around them. For enterprises, 5G enhances 4G LTE capabilities to provide reliable wireless
that enables new IoT applications, drives industries towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution and
creates new opportunities to improve business efficiency.

Our end-to-end private wireless solution enables port authorities to support wireless video surveillance using
cameras mounted on ship-to-shore gantry cranes. The cameras allow them to monitor the status of containers
before and after unloading and inform end customers promptly if damages occur. Manufacturers can use our
end-to-end 5G solution to support ultra-high-density video monitoring of factories with real-time analysis and
alerts. Our Scene Analytics solution makes real-time monitoring possible by using machine learning to detect
and identify abnormal activities.

Optus used our solutions to launch the world’s first live 5G FWA network in
February 2019. The network is based on the latest 3GPP release 15 5G NR
standard. At the launch date, Optus had three live 5G sites. This number
rose to 50 within a month. Optus plans to extend coverage to 1,200 sites by
March 2020. These sites will include residential locations and hotspots around
airports, train stations, sports stadiums and central business districts.

policies to be applied for sensitive information.
We have also taken part in multiple projects involving the development and deployment of AR and VR
applications for campuses and industrial sites. These applications support a variety of use cases, from water
gate control systems for maritime ports to assembly line analysis and maintenance support for factories.
Our MEC platform can rapidly process AR and VR content at the very edge of the mobile network. It reduces
latency to deliver the ultra-responsive performance that is essential for all immersive experiences.
Remote monitoring of
industrial assembly work
Together with Telefónica, the University of Valladolid and the city of Segovia,
Spain, we demonstrated a new 5G Industry 4.0 use case that enables remote
monitoring of an operator’s industrial assembly work using an AR application.
Images of the assembly line are captured by a camera and sent to an MEC
server over a 5G network. A video analytics system compares these images
with the operator’s expected assembly and returns instructions through an
AR app on a tablet. The system requires low latency to monitor the operator’s
work in real time. 5G technology is ideal because it can reduce latency to a
range of 1–5 milliseconds.
The MEC server plays a central role in achieving this low latency because it
allows the data to be processed closer to the end user to support faster
response times – an essential requirement for Industry 4.0. We deployed the
MEC server using a 5G radio node and a complete network core.

For the trial, we captured a live pop concert with HD cameras and
used small cells to transmit the footage to fans in and around the
arena. Fans could stream video from four channels through a mobile
application. By delivering live video at low latency to thousands of
users in real time, the trial showed how 4G, 5G and MEC will make
stadiums smarter and transform the event experience.
