1. Personal background
I live with my family in a small village called, Tam Binh, in Viet Nam where most people here are poor
farmers and my parents are no exception. This village is quite underdeveloped characterized by the
lacking means of communication as well as schools that provide proper education. For this reason, my
parents decided to take me to a larger city called Can Tho to study when I was thirteen years old,
although they did not have enough money for my tuition fee at that time. My parents worked very hard to
support me, and in order to do so, they had to borrow money from many people. I understand how
difficult my parents worked and I promised myself that I must enter a university to meet their
expectations. Soon I reached my academic goals and got accepted into Can Tho University with a major
in Food Technology, where I gained knowledge in many interesting subjects that included: Food
Additives, Food Packaging, and the Principles of Food Preservation. Now that I have earned a
Baccalaureate degree from my department in the College of Agriculture and Applied Biology, I plan to
pursue a Masters degree in Food Sciences to gain more knowledge in this field.

2. Motivation
I am currently a candidate of the Mekong 1,000 scholarship project from Vinh Long province in Viet
Nam. The Mekong 1,000 project provides scholarships to serious students to study abroad to gain
knowledge and experience in professional degree programs before returning to Vietnam to conduct
meaningful work for the community. My academic major and emphasis in college pertained to Food
Technology, which is becoming an increasingly important factor in Viet Nam’s economy. It is my goal to
become a government official in my province. However, today I recognize that my current knowledge is
limited. Thus, I hope to gain practical and professional knowledge to help me gain intellectual confidence
after I graduate from your university.
I believe that studying and conducting research at National Taiwan Ocean University would benefit me
because it is equipped with modern facilities and intellectual information. Studying here would provide
me with a positive chance to enhance my knowledge in food technology, study culture, as well as
exchange research experiences. Upon my completion from the Masters program, I hope to be able to
contribute to further developments in Viet Nam.
3. Interested research topics/ areas
We can not live without food, and thus, food plays an important role for everyone. How to keep nutrition
in food is a very important issue. Currently, people not only care about the appearances of food products
but also its quality. For example, the conventional processing of our food has contributed to the loss of
vitamins and nutrition, and this is why researchers must search for effective and safe methods concerning
the production of food. Therefore, I am extremely concerned about limiting the loss of nutrition in food

production.

Several of the focus of my studies has included Human Nutrition, the Principle of food Preservation, as
well as Food Additives. From my education, I am deeply concern with maintaining nutrition in food
because I believe it would help people live healthier while helping them avoid toxic chemicals, which
harm people’s health or even cause cancer diseases. Thus, one of my goals for researching is to help make
people live healthier and longer.
4. Education goals
My aim is to gain knowledge, study culture, and exchange experience in researching that concerns food
sciences and technology at National Taiwan Ocean University. Further, I intend to learn theoretical as
well as practical knowledge as I pursue a professional master’s degree. I hope that I can devote my
academic abilities to help people in my country in Viet Nam and all over the world to promote healthier
lives.
5. Career/ further education plan
After I graduate with a master’s degree from your university, I intend to return to Vinh Long Province to
serve my community as a government official who monitors the processing and production of agriculture
and other foods. It is a further goal plan of mine to continue my education in a related PhD program. I
believe that attending the National Taiwan Ocean University will assist me in reaching my goals.
