Congratulations!

You have been selected as an engineer to help design a small prototype rollercoaster for
Dreamworld on the Sunshine Coast! There will be a showcase event for you to display your epic
rollercoaster in a mini presentation to the class.
First, dreamworld need you as an engineer to show your dream ideas and research the information behind
why they work.
Next, dreamworld needs a detailed diagram of your dream rollercoaster and need to understand what
physics principles are used in certain sections.
Then, the engineers must collaborate in groups of three to build a rollercoaster using shared ideas from
their diagrams.
Dreamworld wants to see the best functioning types possible, remember to show a variety of energy types
and uses.

Engineering Criteria:
Showcase: Wednesday next week. (3x60 minute project engineering sessions)
Size: No bigger than 1m2
Project Booklet: Solution fluency to create engineering report. (Can be High, Low or No Tech. Ask Teacher)
Groups: Max 3 engineers per group. All must do individual engineering report. Rollercoaster build is combined.
Key Physics concepts to discover:
Tracks and Materials:
 Kinetic Energy
Tracks and materials can be as simple or complex as you would like:
 Toilet rolls  Potential Energy and how it is stored
 Cardboard  Energy Transfer
 Titration Stands  Loss of energy
 Pipe insulation foam.  Illustrate the changes between different energy forms

Engineering Challenge:
Calculate the velocities and changes in acceleration
Calculate the force applied to the track
Calculate the G forces
If a life-size model was built. Would it be survivable?
