I HAVE BEGRUDGED THE YEARS

Angela Manalang-Gloria (1915-1996) had her roots in Guagua,Pampanga. She is essentially a lyric poet and a pianist who

voices her moods and desires through musical, singing stanzas. A practical woman reshaped by the realities of life, she

had found that life is not all love, that love is not the only way to one's goal. In this particular poem, the persona evades

declaring his/her love in fear of being rejected and the unbearable pain it may bring in the process. By keeping the love a

secret, he /she is deprived from the feeling of happiness and sadness. I consider this poem very significant because it

converses about a love from the walls of fear. The uncertainties keep a precious feeling unspoken.

I HAVE BEGRUDGED THE YEARS

Angela Manalang-Gloria

Perhaps the years will get me after all,

Though I have sought to cheat them of their due

By documenting in beauty’s name my soul

And locking out of sight my revenue

Of golden rapture and of sterling tears,

Let others give to Caesar Caesar’s own:

I have begrudged the dictatorial years

The right usurious to tax me to the bone,

Therefore behold me now, a Timon bent

On hoarding each coin of love that should be spent

On you and you, and hushing all display

Of passionate splendour lest I betray

My wealth, lest the sharp years in tithes retrieve

Even the heart not worn upon my sleeve.

I believe that love is untrue when it is kept and left unsaid. There are things in life that have to wait

or be kept, even if it hurts so much, even if it means being dishonest to yourself and to the whole

world. Love, in this poem, is one that is true..although not reciprocated. It does not ask for anything

in return.

Not being able to express what you truly feel for a person is a sign of cowardice. If you love

someone, tell him, show him. You shouldn't be afraid of rejection because nothing will happen if you

are too scared to admit what you really feel. If you get rejected, then just accept it even if it hurts

because love can really be painful at times.
