Checklist for Making Passage Plan

APPRAISAL
01 All charts and publications required for the passage are available including charts
required for bunkering and ports of refuge en route. Any short falls in charts or
publications are requisitioned upon receipt of voyage orders.
Electronic charts (ECS / ARCS) for the intended passage available.
02 Voyage charts and publications corrected to date, including Temporary and
Preliminary notices. Charts corrected up to NM____________.
Electronic charts corrected to latest CD-rom received on board. _________.
03 Tide tables, tidal stream atlases and co-tidal charts checked.
04 Navigation charts and publications studied for Pilotage requirements and VTS
reportings
05 Routeing charts, Vessel Traffic Services, Sailing directions, Ocean Passages of the
World and Loadline zones chart checked and advises taken.
06 Weather charts referred to. (Surface Analysis, 24, 48, 96 Hr prognosis, Wave
height Analysis and forecast) and weather routeing done for the passage
07 Port entry guides and circulars referred to as appropriate. Any restrictions /
limitations checked.
08 Draught calculated for the various stages of the passage and assessment made
for minimum UKC based on vessel speed, available depth and width of navigable
water and salinity of water.
09 Any restrictions imposed due nature or stowage of cargo onboard considered during
passage planning
10 Navigational warnings on Navtex as well as long range NAVAREA warnings
checked and plotted on the charts as required. Navtex settings checked to ensure
correct stations selected for intended voyage
11 Admiralty Distance Table referred to for passage distance & bunker calculation.
12 Appraisal Plan Tec 25A filled in.
13 Time zones (including daylight saving hours) checked.

PLANNING.
01 Largest scale charts being used for plotting courses.
02 Courses drawn on charts (old courses to be erased), and double checked for
accuracy.
03 Waypoint co-ordinates to be marked, including distance between waypoints mentioned.
04 Waypoints entered into all electronic navigation equipment.
05 Hazards, no-go and dangerous areas marked on charts.
06 Cross track error margins to be indicated, as applicable, on charts.
07 Bearing and distance from alteration points marked.
08 Radar conspicuous objects, coastline radar objects / shapes, indicated on charts.
09 Danger clearing bearings and distances indicated on charts, including planning
done for daylight / night time passing of danger points.
10 Parallel indexing distances indicated on relevant charts.
11 Areas where restricted visibility or heavy traffic may be expected, and additional
lookout may be required, is indicated on charts.
12 Position fixing methods & frequency for each area decided for the various stages
of the passage and indicated in the plan.
13 Contingency planning for emergencies to be made and included in the plan, with
recommended actions decided and included. (e.g. emergency anchorage, abort
maneuver, etc.)
14 Strength of navigational watch including status of engine room watch decided for the

various stages of the passage, and detailed in the plan.
15 Tides and / or Tidal Streams checked for the area and indicated in the plan.
16 Ice edge as per latest Ice Bulletin received (if applicable).
17 Estimated limit of all known icebergs marked (if applicable).
18 Piracy infected areas(watches),Warranty Limits, Exclusion Zones, Security Level
Changeover points(if applicable) etc marked on chart.
19 Passage Plan Tec 25B filled in.
20 Does vessel need to exchange Ballast Water: Yes / No
21 Does Vessel need to change fuel during passage / prior arrival: Yes / No / NA
(if Yes, specify area of emission control and ensure requirement of changeover are
complied.

(3) PASSAGE THROUGH ENCLOSED WATERS AND PORT APPROACHES
MUST BE DISCUSSED BETWEEN NAVIGATING OFFICERS AND MASTER.
