flanged systems.
Field modifications are easily accommodated with the Grinnell® Grooved System as couplings and fittings can be easily
rotated, eliminated and/or added to facilitate the necessary modification.

Casting
Tyco Fire & Building Products produces ductile iron, ASTM A-536, Grade 65-45-12 for all of its
Grinnell® Grooved Products. Once the base iron is produced, magnesium is added in precise
measurements to develop the ductile iron grade. The metal is tested chemically, physically, and
microscopically prior to being released for production. Once cast, the ductile iron is again checked
to ensure conformance with these specifications.
Rubber Injection
Tyco Fire & Building Products understands the complexity of providing
gaskets capable of exceeding customer demands. With state of the art
rubber injection presses and tooling, we are able to mold several types of
rubber compounds to meet the various needs of the mechanical market. The
gaskets are manufactured in our facility in Alabama and each gasket is
inspected to ensure it is defect free. Physical tests are performed on the
gaskets to verify compliance with specifications such as ASTM D-2000.
Tooling
Grinnell Products are designed utilizing the finest engineering talent and innovative practices
available. Our engineering department provides product designs to our pattern centers as well as
contracted pattern makers. The Grinnell patterns and our foundry molding machines are capable
of providing the closest tolerance parts available using the green sand method of casting. With our
in-house process, we have the ability to construct, maintain and modify patterns to meet the
demands of the market place.

Addendum dated April 24, 2002 to Tyco Fire Products
Installation Instructions & Technical Manual
No. 19-1.0, TD910, 4-1.1.10, Rev. 8 Dated 8/2001:
In accordance with the UL Listing, Tyco Fire Products BlazeMaster™ CPVC Fire Sprinkler pipe and
fittings may be installed without protection (exposed) when subject to the following additional limitations:
2. Listed pendent, light hazard, quick response, extended coverage sprinklers, 155ºF maximum
temperature rating having deflectors installed within 8 in. from the ceiling and a maximum distance
between sprinklers not to be less than 15 ft and not to exceed 20 ft with an application density of
at least 0.10 gpm/sqft.
3. Listed pendent residential sprinklers, 155ºF maximum temperature rating having deflectors
installed within 8 in. from the ceiling and a maximum distance between sprinklers not to be less
than 15 ft and not to exceed 20 ft with an application density of at least 0.10 gpm/sqft.
4. Listed horizontal sidewall, light hazard, quick response, extended coverage sprinklers, 165ºF
maximum temperature rating having deflectors installed within 6 in. from the ceiling and within 4
in. from the sidewall and a maximum distance between sprinklers not to be less than 14 ft and not
to exceed 18 ft with an application density of at least 0.10 gpm/sqft.
5. Listed horizontal sidewall residential sprinklers, 165ºF maximum temperature rating having
deflectors installed within 6 in. from the ceiling and within 4 in. from the sidewall and a maximum
distance between sprinklers not to be less than 14 ft and not to exceed 18 ft with an application
density of at least 0.10 gpm/sqft.
6. When using fittings in the 1-1/2 in. and greater size only schedule 80 fittings may be used.

BlazeMaster® CPVC Pipe Becomes First Non-Metallic Pipe Approved for Use in Unfinished Basements and Exposed
System Risers
BlazeMaster® CPVC pipe and fittings are now Listed by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) for use in unfinished
basements with exposed solid wood joist installations in accordance with NFPA 13D and in exposed system risers in
accordance with NFPA 13D and 13R. BlazeMaster CPVC pipe is the only non-metallic pipe Listed by UL for these
applications.
❍ Unfinished Basements
In one- and two-family dwellings, BlazeMaster CPVC pipe and fittings may be installed
in unfinished basements without protection (exposed) in accordance with NFPA 13D
for horizontal ceilings utilizing 2 in. x 10 in. or 2 in. x 12 in. solid wood joists on 16 in.
centers. When installed exposed, the system must utilize a residential sprinkler head
with a maximum temperature rating of 155°F, with deflectors a maximum of 1-3/4 in.
below the bottom of the wood joist. Installing the sprinkler head with the deflector 1-3/4
in. below the bottom of the joists accommodated the future addition of a finished ceiling
(reference NFPA 13D, Section 4-2.4, 1999 Edition).
There are additional Listing limitations for BlazeMaster CPVC sprinkler systems installed in unfinished basements with
exposed solid wood joists, so the manufacturer's installation instructions must be referenced before beginning
installation.
BlazeMaster CPVC Now in Combustible Concealed Truss Construction when Space Protected by Central Sprinkler's
Model CC1 Sprinkler Head
❍ Change: An exception to Section 3-3.5 of NFPA 13 was implemented in its 1999 edition which allows BlazeMaster®
CPVC to protect ordinary hazard rooms of otherwise light hazard occupancies where the room does not exceed 400
ft2. Use the same installation guidelines as used for light hazard installations for both concealed and exposed
ordinary hazard applications.
❍ Benefit: Fewer transitions between BlazeMaster® piping and other piping systems or materials.
❍ Examples: Light hazard buildings such as schools, apartments and hotels that contain ordinary hazards rooms such
as storage areas, laundry facilities, or mechanical rooms that do not exceed 400 ft2.
