1. Walk around while the students are filling out their first two
boxes in their record sheets to make sure they know what

they are doing and pointing to which box they are putting in
the questions.
2. Once all the students have completed the first two boxes of
the record sheet, explain that we will be doing the experiment
in two big groups.
3. Split up the class and send the Horses and Lions to go onto
the mat to have free time (already pre set out) and then have
the Hippos and Lizards to do the experiment first.
4. Then explain the instructions –
To begin, fill a glass about 3/4 full with vegetable oil, then pour in the

see (leaving the jar in the middle of their table)
6. Once all the students have finished their observations, put

aside their jars and then swap the groups, sending the
Hippos and Lizards onto the mat for free time and bringing
the Horses and Lions to the experiment tables.
7. Repeat steps 4 and 5.
8. Once all the students have completed, get the students to
pack away their work and come back onto the mat.
