Philosophy of Education

Courtney Lyons

Teaching special education is something that should not be underestimated, but I

think often is. It can be full of challenges, frustrations, and a lot of responsibility. As difficult
as it may be sometimes, I believe that being a teacher is one of the most rewarding careers.
I strongly believe that all children are capable of learning; it is just our jobs as teachers to
find the way that they learn best. As educators we continue to be lifelong learners and
teachers. Teachers should continuously strive to build upon prior knowledge. Our minds
are constantly growing and there is never a point where we know all the information there
is to be known. Each student is different in their own way and we learn from each of those
students.
I believe that all students have the right to a fair and appropriate education. In
special education there is a lot of differentiated instruction within the classroom. This is a
necessity if students are going to receive an education that suits their needs best. I believe
that everybody deserves a fair chance, regardless of disability. All children are unique and
as teachers it is our job to create an environment where each student can grow mentally,
physically, emotionally, and socially. Students should be receiving an education that
challenges them appropriately. As teachers, we must help students identify their learning
styles and then create lessons that correlate with each student’s needs. Students belong in
their least restrictive environments so they can grow in many different aspects with their
regular education peers.
I believe that all students deserve a positive and safe learning environment. Being a
teacher, I want to be someone that students feel supported by. I want them to be happy to
come to our classroom, and to feel welcome. I want to inform other people about disability
and show all the positive sides to it! Some people may enjoy having a disability whereas
society sees it as a burden. An environment where students can express themselves, take
risks, and share ideas is the most favorable. There are two different communities: the
people that understand disability and the people that do not. I want to join them together
more than they are now. I want to be the teacher that encourages their students to push for
whatever it is they want to do in life. They are not limited because of something they have
been labeled with. There are ways and ideas to accommodate for things, and if they want to
do something then we will find a way. I want to be the teacher that leaves a positive impact
on my students. I want to set my students up for success and teach them that it is okay to
fail. We will learn to pick ourselves up and try again.
I believe that today's students are tomorrow's future. All children are special in their
own way and have something exceptional to offer the world. I find that holding high
standards for students encourages them to push themselves farther than they have before.
Children are guided and supported in finding out who they really are and what it is that
they have to offer the world. As a teacher, I will be there to support my students every step
of the way. If we can teach students with disabilities self advocacy and self determination,
then we can create a future where their differences are not frowned upon but instead
respected.
