Foreword
Singapores food manufacturing industry has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Today, it counts among its accolades modern processing technologies and a strong reputation for food safety and quality. These have enabled Singaporean food manufacturers to successfully sell their products not only in our domestic market but also to far ung corners around the world. As the lead government agency for local food manufacturing companies, SPRING Singapore works closely with partner agencies to further enhance the performance of the food manufacturing sector. These include close collaborations with key stakeholders such as the Singapore Food Manufacturers Association (SFMA), Singapore Manufacturers Federation (SMa), Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SMCCI) and Majlis Ugama Islam Singapura (MUIS), the sole custodian of Halal certication in Singapore, to drive industry growth. As the enterprise development agency for growing innovative companies and fostering a competitive SME sector, SPRING provides a host of capability development programmes to give SMEs a leg up in business. SMEs in the food manufacturing industry are encouraged to use these programmes to upgrade their capabilities in terms of technology and innovation, branding, management development and access to markets. Furthermore, the Food Innovation and Resource Centre (FIRC) was set up together with Singapore Polytechnic to help SMEs bring innovative food concepts
to reality by using the most appropriate technologies. This food manufacturing directory was created to showcase the capabilities of local enterprises in the food industry. The companies listed serve as a good representation of the diverse food manufacturing sub-sectors in Singapore, adding vibrancy to the range of products and services available. We invite industry players from around the world to leverage on Singapores strong reputation as a trusted hub and commitment to food safety to build strategic alliances that will seed new product ideas and optimise resources to improve productivity. We look forward to taking the industry to even higher levels of excellence, where our companies develop and deliver innovative, high value-added products and services for the global marketplace.
Industry Overview
Singapores food industry has been a signicant component of our growing economy. Leveraging on our strategic location, world-class infrastructure and connectivity, skilled manpower and reputation for high quality standards, the country is well positioned to become the next food hub, playing host to numerous international enterprises. The food manufacturing industry is made up of some 750 companies, dominated by mainly small and medium enterprises. These companies span 17 sub-sectors, ranging from avours, sauces, ready meals, noodles, sausage making to confectionery, chocolates and beverages. Despite their size, Singapores food manufacturers are not conned to the domestic market. They are keen to venture overseas and many have gained footholds in various parts of the world from traditional markets in the Asean region and emerging global markets such as the Middle East and Russia.
In 2008, the industry output and valueadded amounted to S$7 billion and S$1.5 billion respectively. Singapores total food exports reached S$7.5 billion in 2009. The global demand for good quality food that is safe for consumption has helped to increase exports of made-in-Singapore food products. With food science and technological innovation gaining importance in the manufacturing value chain, Singapore food manufacturers are quick to invest in R&D to cater to a wider consumer base, improve packaging and increase product shelf life. Industry players also take pride in their commitment to strict food safety standards many are certied to international food safety standards such as the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), ISO 22000 and BRC which help them gain a competitive edge in the global arena. Increasingly, many are also exploring certication to SS 540, a Singapore Standard on Business Continuity Management to help businesses prepare for crises.

Healthier Choice Symbol Nutrition Labelling Programme administered by Health Promotion Board, Singapore
The Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) on packaged food products indicates that they are healthier options as compared to products within the same food category, and this helps consumers to make informed food choices when grocery shopping. Products carrying the HCS symbol are generally lower in total fat, saturated fat, sodium and sugar. Some are also higher in dietary bre, calcium and whole-grains as compared to similar products within the same food category. Each food category has a separate set of nutritional criteria to adhere to. Seven in ten Singaporeans were found to be aware of the HCS and 69% had used this symbol to assist them in making healthier food choices. Manufacturers looking for an added advantage for their product can consider carrying the HCS. To date, there are guidelines covering over 70 food categories. To nd out if your product is eligible for the HCS, you may download the updated nutrition guidelines from the link below. You can also obtain information on application procedures, required supporting documents, regulations and guidance on labelling and marketing of HCS products, and view the list of products currently carrying the HCS. COMPANY PROFILE
When Mr Poh Ah Seng founded Seng Hua Hng Foodstuff in 1974, he chose a camel as the brands mascot with the hopes that his company would have all the resilient characteristics of the animal. Evidently, Mr Poh chose well. Seng Hua Hng has since grown to become the largest nut processor in the country, with an extensive product range that includes a variety of avoured nuts, nut mixes, premium nuts and avoured peas and beans. Since its inception, Mr Poh has made it a point to be involved in all stages of processing in order to render better control and ensure quality output. He has been personally involved in the sourcing and purchasing from farmers, grading and sizing the raw materials, blanching and roasting, and the packaging and delivery to his customers. This has helped the company maintain stringent quality control practices as well as improvements along the way. Despite its success, the company consistently embarks on R&D projects to develop new products which cater to a wider range of consumers internationally.
