The Cumulative Promotion Index, CPI, is the most timely and predictive of the major graduation rate measurements. It is the sum of the 4 major high school promotions that happen in one calendar school year: 9th to 10th, 10th to 11th, 11th to 12th and 12th to graduation. It measures all four classes in a high school. In the more common cohort-centered graduation rate measurements, three of the measurements used are already over a year old, and one is three years old. No measurement used in the CPI needs to be over a year old.
