The document discusses different oxygen delivery devices and their uses as well as factors to consider when administering oxygen therapy to patients.

Nasal cannula, simple face mask, non-rebreather mask with reservoir are discussed as different devices to deliver varying amounts of oxygen based on a patient's needs.

A patient's age, level of consciousness, and presence of any artificial devices should be considered when administering oxygen therapy.

EXAMPLE

One significant learning experience that I have learned in the Nursing

Foundation 2003 course is how to recognize and provide oxygen to a
patient having respiratory distress. Oxygen therapy is widely used in
the management of a number of chronic and acute health conditions.
The therapy may be used in a hospital or pre-hospital setting to manage
emergency situations or in the home setting to manage long-term health
conditions. The mode of delivery and device used for oxygen therapy
depends upon several factors including the patients specific needs and
the opinion of the medical professionals involved. For instance, the
oxygen therapy may be used to deliver supplemental oxygen to patients
with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on a long-term
basis. The use of supplemental oxygen is indicated when a patient with
COPD has a partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) level of 55 mmHg or
less or an oxygen saturation (SaO2) level of 88% or less. Each

delivering device delivers a specific amount and patients oxygen need

will determine the device used. It is important to consider patients age,
level of consciousness, and presence of an artificial device when
administering oxygen. It should be treated as a drug because it has
dangerous side effects such as atelectasis or oxygen toxicity so, the 10
rights of medication administration should be applied when giving
oxygen. Oxygen is highly combustible and so should not be brought
near a fire source because it can easily ignite. No smoking near any
oxygen source. Use an oximeter to check patients oxygen level as an
ongoing assessment.
I learned how to deliver oxygen to a patient using the nasal cannula
which delivers a flow of up to 6L/minute, and to use humidification
once the flow is greater than 4 L/minute. The simple face mask can be
used for short term oxygen therapy that can deliver from 30-60 % of

oxygen. The mask should not be used for carbon dioxide retainers like
COPD patients because this will not improve their conditions. The nonrebreather mask with reservoir delivers a high flow from 60-100 %
with flow of 6 -10L/minute. It is important to continuously inspect the
reservoir to make sure it is inflated. Oxygen therapy has beneficial
effects on clients with chronic cardiopulmonary disease. It improves
exercise tolerant and fatigue level and management of dyspnea .Overall
it has been shown to significantly increase patients lifespan.

I rate my proficiency as good, what I did to achieve this competency is

that I attend theory classes in Nursing Foundation 2003, I attend and

complete all the lab skills covered in this course. Also, I do lab
exercises in preparation for each lab practice session. I watch NorQuest
college Mosby videos at home and prior to lab practice sessions and
this gives me a broader understanding when I practice various skills. I
also practice with my classmates and we watch each others practice
and provide feedback for improvement.
The knowledge I have acquired so far in the Nursing Foundation 2003

Clinical Integration Assessment (CIA) practice exam, clinical practice
and also in my future nursing practice. I wish to provide continuous
care to people in need of care, so that they can fell happy and improve
on their overall health conditions.
