The History of Video Editing


In 1895 the Lumiere Brothers invented what is now
called Cinematography. The process was invented by
combining camera, printer and projector. Around the
same time Edison Company invented a similar device
Edisons Kinetograph.

The difference between these two inventions is that
the Cinemtographe shoots sixteen frames per second
whereas the Kinetograph shoots at forty-eight frames
per second, the main advantage of shooting at low
frames is that it uses less film was used.
Following the Lumiere brothers George Melies
produces Voyage of the Moon loosely based on the
wiring of Jules Verne and HG Wells. Hi creation is one of the first to
create special effects using hand painting and tinting.
Shortly after in 1903 the first signs of editing are shown, for
example the film Great Train robbery by Edwin Porter, by studying
the reaction of his audience he found that he had discovered a new
way of portraying a story in form of film.

In 1908, The American Mutoscope and Biography Company
employed D.W Griffith. The company was known for making film
using a 35mm format instead of the traditional 70mm. They found
that Mr Griffith skill in making silent movies therefor making the
decision a lot simpler to hire him.
1910/1920 allowed Lev Kuleshov to develop his work and therefor
creating what is now called The Kuleshov Effect. This effect allows
the filmmaker to use two scenes to create different emotions. For
example if a close up scene is followed by morbid section then this
can portray deep sadness. The same close up scene can also be
used but instead of a morbid scene this can be replaced by a
woman and can somehow show lust.
Edward Dymytryk 1940 predominantly known for his film noir work,
including Murder, my sweet made in 1944, which was loosely
based on Raymond Chandlers novel, Farewell, My lovely. It is also
important to note that Dymytrk was part of the Hollywood Ten, the
ten individual denied to testify against the Soviet Union second Red
scare.
1969, Walter Murch is well known for his sound and editing work,
this allowed Walter Murch to work with the great George Lucas and
later in his career working on the God Father Part 2 soundtrack,
which was released in mind 1970s.

Clapperboard is a mixture of film slate and
chalkboard slate that contains information about the
next scene. The loud CLAP is used to sync both
sound with image making the alignment process a lot
simpler.
Non-linear Editing is a method of editing that
allows the editor to choose any frame, regardless of
sequence. This allows the editor to cut and paste a
scene into the sequence with ease.
Steenbeck is a company that specialises in creating
a flat bed-editing table this allowed the editor to cut,
process and add audio using both 16mm and 35mm
film. The sound was edited using magnetic sound
technology.
The Moviola intvented in1924- was a machine that
allowed film editors to view their film whilst editing.

Video Home System is an analogue recording


tape mainly aimed at the consumer level. The VHS
cassette was developed by JVC in the mid 1970s.
Final cut pro is software
developed by Apple, to allow its
consumers to nonlinearly edit film and footage on a
digital medium. This software runs on an Intelbased mac and runs currently run on OS X 10 or
later. This programmes allows professional level of
editing available to the world.
