Student Interview & Reflection

4/2/15
Interview Date: 3/10/15
1. What is your favorite subject? Why?
Science is my favorite subject. I really like doing the experiments. Its not like every
other subject where we talk about what we could be doing or how something would
work. In science, you actually get to try things out and see for yourself.
2. What is your least favorite subject? Why?
Math is my least favorite. I think it is boring and mind racking; theres just too many
steps.
3. What is your favorite book?
My favorite book is Marley & Me.
4. What do you enjoy doing outside of school?
I like to paint in my free time. I paint nature scenes usually.
5. Do you prefer working with a partner or by yourself?
I like to work with a partner because its nice to have someone to help you.
6. Do you ask a lot of questions in class?
Not reallyonly if I really dont know the answer and I really have to know the
answer.
7. What is one thing you need to practice more?
I need to practice comprehending, like, retelling a story better.
8. When I say writing what is the first word that comes to your mind?
Imagination, because whatever I imagine, I write.
9. What type of writing is your favorite?
I like to read things that are written like fantasy.
10.What type of things do you write about?
I write about anything that pops into my head!
11.Are you excited about middle school?
Yes! Im excited about having a locker.

Reflection:
I thought this interview went really well. Although I did three student
interviews, this student gave me the most insight into their world. The student was
honest and didnt just tell me what they thought I wanted to hear (I interviewed
right after observing a great math lesson and the student admitted it was their least
favorite subject)!
The most interesting response I got from this student was the fact that when I
say writing, they think imagination. I thought that was really insightful for
someone their age. Throughout this course I have learned that writing is all about
imagination, something that I didnt quite have a grasp on before. It was great that
these students (clearly) werent always tied to prompts when writing.
Overall, this student seemed to enjoy their role in the classroom. One of the
reasons I decided to interview this particular student was because of the honest
personality I saw when interacting with peers. This student excelled in each subject,
yet I knew they all were not a strong suit. I was really excited to sit down and talk
with them, and am really glad I did!
