    Opening Statement of Opinion

    Opening statement declaring the opinion is clear and concise using the exact verbiage of the topic given.

    Opening statement is unclear or off topic.

    5 pts.

    Reasons with supporting details.

    The writer provides 3 or more reasons for their stated opinion along with details supporting their reasons stated.

    The writer provides 2-3 reasons with details that support their opinion.

    The writer provides 23 reasons but fails to provide details for all of the reasons provided.

    5 pts. Closing Statement of Opinion Closing statement declaring the opinion is clear and concise using the exact verbiage of the topic given.

    One or more of the writer's arguments and evidence is significantly weak with limited reasons and little to no details.

    The writer did not use any effective reasons or details to back up their opinion.

    Closing statement is unclear or off topic.

    Writing Fluency:

    5pts.

    There are few, if any, errors. Capitalization, punctuation and spelling of grade level words are correctly done and writing is clear and concise.

    There are a few surface errors but they are not distracting. The majority of the writing is clear and concise with few errors.

    Some surface errors are distracting, though they don't impede overall communication. Writing is mostly clear and/or a bit wordy.
