PHYSIOLOGY OF SMALL INTESTINE

SMALL INTESTINE

STRUCTURAL CHARACTERISTICS OF SI

SECRETIONS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE

1. 2.

Intestinal juice / Succus entericus

The intestinal secretions are formed by the enterocytes of the crypts. Rate of about 1800 ml/day. These Secretions are almost pure extracellular fluid. Have a slightly alkaline pH in the range of 7.5 to 8.0. Colorless ,but slightly cloudy. Include : Aqueous component (Water (98.4%) & electrolytes) Intestinal enzymes (Enterokinase , peptidases , disaccharidases & intestinal lipases)

3.

Mucus

ELECTRONEUTRAL NACL ABSORPTION IN THE

INTESTINE

Chloride and Bicarbonate secretion in the small intestine

REGULATION OF SI SECRETIONS
1.

Local enteric nervous reflexes :

- Mechanical : distension , tactile stimuli

- Chemical : irritative stimuli from the chyme Role of VIP, PGs ,Ach & Secretin Vagal stimulation

3.

FUNCTIONS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE

1.

Segmentations mix chyme with digestive juices and bring food into contact with mucosa for absorption; peristalsis propels chyme through small intestine.

2.

Completes digestion of carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.

3. 4.

Begins and completes digestion of nucleic acids.

Absorbs about 90% of nutrients and water that pass

through digestive system.
