Thriller conventions and microelements of Angels & Demons

Thriller conventions Plot: Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon (played by Tom Hanks), works to
solve a murder and prevent a terrorist act against the Vatican, carried out by the dark, infamous cult, the illuminati.

Characters: The characters mainly consist of the people that the protagonist knows or meets, in his pursuit find the antagonist who is constantly one step ahead, dragging the protagonist into a complex web of confusion. The protagonist is left with an abundance of enigmas to solve, keeping the audience hooked to find out how it is solved.

Micro elements Sound: There is plenty of non diegetic slow tempo music, usually at the beginning of an enigma, which later builds into a much faster tempo, enhancing tension within scenes. Camera angles: A very wide range of angles are used in the film, ranging from birds eye view and crab shots, to over the shoulder and close ups. These shots give an edge to the film, revealing hints on how to solve occurring enigmas or showing unique angles of the setting Editing: The editing is slow, in order for the viewer to gather what has happened in the scenes. However quick editing is used in high action and intensity scenes to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Mise en Scene: The main settings within the story involve the Vatican City and secret rooms and locations around the Vatican. The lighting is generally dim; items such as candles are used to give a mysterious effect. The architecture and art displays an old and eerie feel as the audience venture into the unkown.
