The Unit coordinates the national activities in the area of migration and at the same time help in the development of a coherent migration Policy framework for the country.
The issue of migration is currently considered a very important and fundamental element in the global development agenda. In November, 2004 Ghana hosted an international conference on Migration and Development under the auspices of the United Nations. Regional hearings were held in various parts of the world leading to a report by the Global Coalition on International Migration on the nexus between migration and development. Ghana, as an active partner in the global discussion on migration, was admitted as a member of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in November, 2005. IOM is the global body with the main objective of managing migration and assisting member states also to develop such capacities.
The Migration Unit was as a result established at the Ministry of the Interior in July, 2008 with technical support and equipment from IOM.

To achieve the effective management of migration as a tool for the sustainable development of Ghana.
Mission Statement:
To contribute to Ghana’s economic and social development by providing key support to Government of Ghana’s efforts to better integrate migration into its national development framework.
Objectives:
- Ensure the link between migration and development is clearly and practically established in government programmes for effective implementation.
- Ensure that migration is mainstreamed into district, sector and national plans.
- Identify various options for managing migration for Ghana’s socio-economic development and wealth creation.
