Rifts are obstacles first appearing in Super Mario Bros. Wonder that resemble tears in reality, distorting the area around them to reveal a dark field of stars. Most rifts appear to "move" through the environment by opening up wider in the direction of movement and closing behind themselves, restoring that area to normal. If a rift makes contact with a player character, they will immediately take damage. Rifts do not display any interactions with terrain, Koopa Troopas, or other objects, only visually appearing on top of them.
Rifts are introduced in the eponymous course Beware of the Rifts, which features a large number of rifts of varying sizes and speeds. Most of these rifts act as obstacles to be avoided, but several of them are contained entirely within terrain as decoration. The course's Wonder Effect shows the rifts joining together to form Rift Mario, who has a similarly star-filled appearance. For the duration of the Wonder Effect no rifts can be seen, as only Rift Mario and several Dark Nokonoko are present.
