When you bring 23 deep tech founders together in San Francisco, you make it count. At Lonely Whale, we help unlock change for seemingly intractable challenges through diverse coalitions activated around precise, targeted programs. In keeping with this ethos, during Climate Week NYC we convened a roundtable with Ocean Wise and Alpine Group , supported by our partners at the UN Environment Programmee, to address one of these challenges head-on: plastic microfibers from synthetic textiles – the largest primary source of marine microplastics. We were honored to have Amber Valletta, UN Environment Programme’s newly appointed Goodwill Ambassador, open the session with remarks that underscored the opportunity for fashion to provide a blueprint for circularity across industries and economies. And, together with senior brand, philanthropic and NGO leaders, we explored the enabling conditions needed for innovative upstream solutions to address the challenge of plastic microfibers across the value chain. This roundtable reaffirmed what drives change: focusing attention on a specific issue and forging collective action around solutions. In keeping with our volunteering theme this year of land stewardship on both coasts, the VT-based ZymoChem team had an opportunity to get their hands dirty ahead of the long weekend. While volunteering at the Intervale Center in Burlington, we could see how our microplastic-free BAYSE Bio-SAP will soon become the replacement for fossil-based SAPs used for soil conditioning and moisture retention. This month we are proud to share the impact and growth of recently promoted Research Associate, Emma Scaff! In just her first year of industry experience, Emma has quickly grown from her initial role as a Testing Technician on the ZymoChem Materials Development team and into her current position. Today, she ensures product quality and safety, designs workflows for sample assessment, streamlines documentation, and identifies and solves sources of error. To augment her prior studies in Chemistry and Forensic Science, Emma is also pursuing an MS in Biotechnology with a business focus. This allows her to bridge her strong technical foundation with industry and commercial insights. Her contributions have elevated the team’s efficiency and reliability, and we are excited to see her continued growth in biotechnology! We are thrilled to highlight the contributions of Sara Gushgari-Doyle, Ph.D. on our team! Sara brings deep expertise in computational biology, bioinformatics, and metabolic engineering to identify and alleviate pathway bottlenecks. Her work is helping ZymoChem unlock a more efficient, scalable, and sustainable production system. Prior to joining ZymoChem, Sara had built an impressive foundation in environmental microbiology; earning a PhD at University of California, Berkeley optimizing unique metabolisms in complex environments, followed by a postdoc at the Berkeley Lab discovering novel microbes and metabolisms. This combination of academic rigor and applied innovation is helping to drive ZymoChem's mission forward. Beyond the bench, Sara is passionate about science communication and advancing diversity in STEM, ensuring that the impact of her work extends well beyond the lab!
