In a number of high profile interviews, Academy Award winning actor, Sidney Poitier recounted his humble beginnings as a dishwasher aspiring to become an actor in post-war New York. As a young man newly migrated from the Bahamas, working as a dishwasher, he discovers an ad in the Amsterdam Newspaper for actors to audition for the American Negro Theater in Harlem. Despite the challenges of not being able to read very well, Sidney goes to the audition, where he soon discovers that he is not only completely unprepared and is thrown out of the audition for lying about being an actor. Yet his passion to be more does not go unnoticed; Howard Katz is an elderly Jewish waiter working at the same restaurant sees something special in Sidney and offers his guidance, by becoming an unexpected mentor.
