Jigra (2024)
convenient script and some illogical sequences
#Jigra is a term for courage or mettle. The heroine, a young woman named Satya, does possess plenty of it. From an early age, following the death of their parents, she takes complete control of her kid brother. She fulfils all his needs and is almost a mother to him. When he travels to a foreign country and gets wrongly implicated in a narcotics case, she goes all out and rescues him. The story did have potential, but the convenient script and some illogical sequences have ruined the film. In addition to Alia Bhatt, Vivek Gomber, Rahul Ravindran and Manoj Pahwa deliver good performances. Running time needs to be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 2/5.
The Buckingham Murders (2023)
the masses may not appreciate it
After watching #TheBuckinghamMurders, I completely understand why this film spurred Kareena Kapoor to turn producer. I am sure she was blown away after perusing the script. Here, she plays detective Jass Bhamra, who is grieving the loss of her child and is called in to investigate the disappearance of a kid named Ishpreet. The kid is Sikh; the main suspect is a young Muslim man. Will detective Bhamra ensure that justice is delivered? What is the reason behind detective Hardy, her senior, being so eager to crucify the accused? Are the kid's parents concealing something? Performances are excellent, especially by Kareena Kapoor and Ash Tandon. Hansal Mehta's direction is awesome. However, this is a "classy" movie and the masses may not appreciate it. Rating 3.5/5.
Saroj Ka Rishta (2022)
not because you want to entice a man
Rotund Saroj joins a gym after realizing that the guy she loves wishes to wed a slim woman. Despite dieting and exercising, she gains weight. Why? Because her trainer adores her round figure and doesn't want her to reduce. #SarojKaRishta narrates an interesting tale and boasts of good performances by Sanah Kapur and Kumud Mishra - their bonding is well depicted. It also conveys a crucial message - learn to idolize your body - being overweight is unhealthy - but you should lose weight only if you so desire - and not because you want to entice a man. Running time needs to be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 2.5/5.
Raghuveer (2024)
film needs your patronage
#RaghuveerMovie is a biography on the life of Samarth Ramdas, an ardent devotee of Hanuman and Lord Rama. Right from childhood, unlike other boys of his age, he spends his time contemplating and meditating. His nuptial is fixed at the age of twelve, but he flees the mandap because he believes marriage would restrict him and prevent him from performing his primary duty, which is "welfare of mankind". He then embarks on a journey and sets up ashrams at different locations. The film lacks entertainment value and is unlikely to find acceptance with today's youth, despite Nilesh Kunjir's straightforward direction. Ninad Kulkarni as the young Ramdas and Vikram Gaikwad as the adult Ramdas have performed well. This film needs your patronage. Do watch it in cinemas. Rating 2.5/5.
The U P Files (2024)
weak and convenient screenplay
In the past, Uttar Pradesh had nothing but misfortune. The life of the average man was despicable. But worry not. Now Abhay Singh has been elected as the chief minister of the state and he has established "kanoon ka raj". This means all lawbreakers will now be petrified. The common man will not face any discrimination. People who disregard the constitution will suffer severe consequences. #TheUPFiles is quite an impassive film which takes the easy way out by downgrading one political party. The basic premise may seem stimulating, but the weak and convenient screenplay wrecks everything. Running time needs to be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 1/5.
Paalum Pazhavum (2024)
remarkable performances by Jasmine and Jose
Sumi, a 33-year-old lonesome, disillusioned woman meets Sunil, a 22-year-old man on Facebook. They converse, fall in love and tie the knot. However, what occurs when Sumi, a responsible woman, discovers that Facebook can be deceptive? In reality, Sunil is a wastrel who married an older, employed woman on purpose, to avoid having to work. What happens when Sunil realizes that Sumi has been a caregiver to her bed-ridden mother since so many years and she needs a companion who respects her? Will he mend his ways and woo her? Will she acknowledge the fact that Sunil is a virtuous man, even though he doesn't have a degree or a job? #PalumPazhavum boasts of remarkable performances by Meera Jasmine and Aswin Jose. Running time needs to be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 3/5.
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
not have seen an adult fairy tale
Heroine teaches narratology. She prefers her independence over intimate connections, leading a solitary life by choice. On a visit to Istanbul for a conference, she encounters a "djinn" who offers her three wishes. She doubts his motives, but he convinces her by telling her stories of how he was enslaved in the past and how he lost the women he adored. You may have watched myriad movies, but you would not have seen an adult fairy tale like #ThreeThousandYearsOfLonging. Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba are perfectly cast. Their banter is entertaining. Running time needs to be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 3/5.
Stree 2: Sarkate Ka Aatank (2024)
blatantly asinine
In part one, released in 2018, a terrifying female spirit abducted lone men at night and stripped them. The second part centers on Sarkata's kidnapping of young, contemporary ladies because he has a grudge against Stree. He shaves their heads and makes them drape a white saree. It is very evident that #Stree2 was created only to capitalize on the success of the first instalment. Some scenes are funny, but many are blatantly asinine. Overall, the movie is a massive let down. Rajkummar Rao, as always, delivers a credible performance. But after watching him in #SrikanthMovie, I felt he certainly deserved a far superior script. Running time needs to be reduced by 25 minutes. Rating 2/5.
Irugapatru (2023)
explores human relationships
Here is a tale involving four husbands. Husband number one never addresses his wife by her name; instead he calls her "arivu ketta mundam" (brainless torso). Husband number two wants a divorce because his wife has gained weight post delivery. Husband number three cannot digest the fact that his wife is smarter than him; he tries to destroy her self confidence. Husband number four is unhappy because his wife never argues with him; she never checks his phone in his absence. Tamil movie #Irugapatru explores human relationships; it is emotional, sensible and heartwarming. All the actors have done a fantastic job. Rating 3.5/5.
Animal (2023)
Ranbir Kapoor is outstanding in a film which isn't
The world as seen by director Sandeep Reddy Vanga comprises of two categories of men - one is the "alpha" male who shows initiative and resourcefulness - he knows exactly what he wants and how to acquire it - he resorts to extreme violence if required - he walks around the house nude - the other male is the "loser" - he has no fixed goal - he composes meaningless poetry to woo a lady - #AnimalMovie cannot be termed "problematic" and would have worked if the story had more depth - it is unclear as to why the hero worships his father - why he gives up a cushy life in the USA - Ranbir Kapoor is outstanding in a film which isn't - Rashmika Mandanna needs to work on her dialogue delivery - running time needs to be reduced by 40 minutes - rating 2.5/5.
Premalu (2024)
delightful entertainer with dazzling performances
Sachin meets Reenu at a wedding and instantly falls for her. But she considers him to be just a buddy. She arranges for his lodging, tries to get him a decent job and takes him along on picnics. Does she indulge him because she loves him or because she cares for him or because she likes to spend time with him? He most definitely does not meet her ideal of a "model" life companion. So, are they destined to live happily ever after? Malayalam #PremaluMovie is a delightful entertainer with dazzling performances, especially by Naslen, Sangeeth Prathap and Shyam Mohan. Running time needs to be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 3.5/5.
Khel Khel Mein (2024)
More profanity would have definitely added value to the film.
Imagine a scenario where your friends and partners can listen in on your conversations and read your messages without restriction. What if you receive an email asking you to rate an escort whom you had hired? What if you receive a call from your teenage daughter asking if she can spend the night with her boyfriend? What happens if it comes out that you are gay? What if you are looking for a sperm donor because your husband is incapable of fathering a kid? What if you are sleeping with your senior at work so that you can go up the corporate ladder? The premise of #KhelKhelMein is intriguing and the film has good performances by Akshay and Taapsee. More profanity would have definitely added value to the film. Music is bad. Running time needs to be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 2.5/5.
Adios Amigo (2024)
Despite the presence of capable actors
Just when I thought there couldn't possibly be a "substandard" Malayalam movie, along comes #AdiosAmigo. Despite the presence of capable actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu and Asif Ali, this is a futile movie. What is the narrative exactly about? After meeting at a bus stop, two men decide to travel together. Since they don't have a set destination, they go to different places and spend time together. The disparities between the affluent and the poor are amply displayed in the movie. There are some wealthy individuals who believe that having money is irrelevant if it cannot be used to assist the underprivileged. There are some poor people who desperately need money to clear their medical bills but are unable to procure funds for the same. Performances are good. Running time needs to be reduced by 25 minutes. Rating 1.5/5.
Mothers' Instinct (2024)
To what extent will a mother mollycoddle her child
#MothersInstinct, set in the 1960s, is the tale of two mothers, Celine and Alice, who happen to be neighbours as well as very good friends. Both ladies lead plush lives and are always immaculately dressed. When Celine loses her son to a terrible accident, both ladies grieve together. But there is a very thin line between grief and guilt. Given that Alice had no control over the catastrophe and her best friend had lost her son, should she feel guilty? Is Celine supposed to grieve so much that she goes insane? To what extent will a mother mollycoddle her child? Hathaway and Chastain deliver amazing performances in this film, stunningly photographed by Benoît Delhomme. Rating 3.5/5.
Accident or Conspiracy: Godhra (2024)
he completely messes up the narrative
On the morning of 27 February 2002, when the Sabarmati Express was pelted with stones, where was the RPF? Where was the fire department when the train caught fire? Why were the charred bodies of 59 people transported to a far-away hospital in Ahmedabad? After the incident, why did the local leaders deliver inflammatory speeches? Were the ensuing Godhra riots a "state facilitated" massacre? #GodhraAccidentOrConspiracy is a courtroom drama which does raise some pertinent and agonizing queries. But just when we are about to appreciate director Shivaaksh's intent, he completely messes up the narrative by conveniently blaming the media and the minority community. Quite often, the truth is right in front of us, yet we are unable to perceive it. Running time needs to be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 2/5.
Manikbabur Megh (2021)
eventually bonds with the cloud
The narrative of #TheCloudAndTheMan centers on Manik, who leads a mundane existence and is incredibly lonely. He follows the same schedule every single day. He seldom engages in a conversation with anyone except his friend Kali. After his father passes away, he suddenly feels as if he is being followed by a cloud. He is afraid at first, but he eventually bonds with the cloud and begins to communicate with it. Chandan Sen is a fantastic fit for the role of Manik. His disheveled appearance and body language speak volumes about his acting prowess. Anup Singh's excellent black-and-white cinematography captures every little aspect of Manik's house and place of employment. This film needs your love and support. Do watch it in theatres. Rating 3.5/5.
Alyad Palyad (2024)
horror elements are woefully inadequate
Once upon a time, a hamlet in Maharashtra was governed by a barbaric chieftain. His pastime was molesting women and slaying the guys who intervened to save them. It has been many years now, but even today, the discontented spirits of these tormented villagers return to haunt the hapless residents. How long will this continue? Marathi movie #AlyadPalyad is supposed to be a "horror comedy" which is entertaining only in parts. The horror elements are woefully inadequate. While Sandeep Pathak's performance is impressive, that of the other actors is mediocre. Running time should be reduced by 15 minutes. Rating 2.5/5.
Satyaprem Ki Katha (2023)
without ever having coitus
Hero and heroine get married but she refuses to sleep with him due to a traumatic experience in the past. Hero is disappointed because he had saved his virginity for her. But, being a simpleton and a gentleman, he never pressurizes her. Instead he charms her with his love and they end up becoming close friends. #SatyapremKiKatha imparts two crucial lessons: one - when a girl says "no" she actually means it and two - a married couple can stay happily married without ever having coitus. Performances are good, especially by the supporting cast, but the film takes a long long time to come to the point. Rating 2.5/5.
Builder Boys (2024)
The correct rejoinder is "trust"
Two prerequisites for being a successful builder? The obvious answer is, availability of land and funding. However, this response is untrue. The correct rejoinder is "trust". Middle class persons trust a builder with their entire savings and in return they expect a spacious flat with good amenities. They anticipate having a space to unwind in the evenings after a long day at work. They expect to reside in a building with cordial neighbors and a supportive atmosphere. But what happens if their hopes are dashed? What if the builder uses crappy construction material and finally delivers a tawdry product? Gujju film #BuilderBoys addresses a timely topic and succeeds primarily because of Raunaq's and Shivam's performances. You root for their characters and you sincerely wish they would achieve victory. Rating 3/5.
Kooki (2023)
three sexually frustrated men
One wet night, three sexually frustrated men rape a sixteen-year-old girl. There was one more guy who did not rape her, he was the only one who could have protected her, but he chose not to do anything. Her family, doctors, cops and the media supported her; the offenders were swiftly brought to justice. But the victim is still miserable. Why? Because rape is not a one-time act. Rape has not just damaged her private parts, it has harmed her life, her convictions, her self-worth and her aspirations. Yet in our country, rape is not regarded as the most "odious" crime. #Kooki is a poignant drama with good performances by the entire cast. This film needs your love and support, do watch it in theatres. Rating 3.5/5.
Ullozhukku (2024)
exhilarating performances by Urvashi and Parvathy
Torrential rains in Kuttanad are used to portray melancholy in the Malayalam film #Ullozhukku. There's plenty in the movie for everyone to be sad. Leelamma is sad because her son just passed away. And, because her daughter-in-law has brought shame to the family. Anju is sad because she was coerced to ditch her boyfriend and marry someone whom she did not love. Rajeev is sad because he wants to start his own venture but is forced to work as a waiter. Why therefore should you view a film that is so filled with "sadness"? Because this movie portrays women as brave enough to make difficult choices and support one another in times of need, while still being vulnerable. Because of the exhilarating performances by Urvashi and Parvathy. Because of the brilliant direction by Christo Tomy. Rating 4/5.
Veetla Vishesham (2022)
better than the original
Unnikrishnan and Krishnaveni are parents to two boys. The older son is of marriageable age, while the younger is still in high school. Disaster strikes the middle-class family when Krishnaveni discovers that she is pregnant. Her sons look at her with contempt; they are unable to comprehend that their parents are sexually active. But her husband is extremely supportive and they are determined to have the baby. What follows is certainly worth viewing on the big screen. Tamil movie #VeetlaVishesham may be a remake, but it is better than the original. Performances are excellent. Please watch. Rating 3/5.
Udal (2022)
he single-handedly fights off his attackers
In the dead of night, a man is physically tortured by his exasperated daughter-in-law and her beau. Why? Because she is tired of being the homemaker while her spouse works in another city. They have murdered his wife and he is next in line. The man is old, he can't see or hear properly and appears to be vulnerable. Yet he single-handedly fights off his attackers and leaves the audience awestruck. The entire second half is shot in darkness and this is the film's biggest asset. Performances are excellent. The background music is another plus point. Do watch Malayalam film #Udal in cinemas. Rating 4/5.
Thalavan (2024)
both deliver strong performances
The film narrates the tale of two police officers, Jayashankar and Karthik who are posted at the same station but are not on the same page. Their lives take a serious turn when the body of a woman is found on the terrace of the former's house. This soon balloons into a sensational case due to the involvement of a police officer and there is a lot of pressure on the department to arrest the perpetrator. So, is Jayashankar being set up, or is he actually guilty? Was he having an affair with the dead woman? Why was she constantly in touch with him? Asif Ali and Biju Menon both deliver strong performances in the Malayalam thriller #Thalavan. Some more brutality would have definitely added value to the film. Rating 3/5.
Adrushya (2022)
does have a riveting premise
Marathi movie #Adrushya is the story of twin sisters Sanika and Sayli, who suffer from "progressive blindness", which is a rare, genetic, neurodegenerative disease. One sister undergoes eye surgery and commits suicide. The cops do not suspect foul play, but the other sister does and decides to investigate on her own. She then realizes that a killer in on the prowl and her life too is in danger. What happens next? The film does have a riveting premise, but lackadaisical direction and a mundane script ruined it completely. Manjari Fadnnis is good. Running time should be reduced by 20 minutes. Rating 2/5.
