This series is riveting. Many episodes are ho-hum but some are exceptionally well done and even anxiety provoking. The two female leads are extraordinary. Nina is nearly incapable of making rational decisions...and then not sabotaging them. Billie is a lunatic on the loose with a big heart just when it in most needed. My wife and I watch episodes of this nightly.
I react to "stimulus" and have found myself flipping off Nina for the consistently bad decisions she makes and I talk to the actors constantly, annoying to my wife.
The first few seasons seemed ho-hum; perhaps that is a product of getting to know the actors but as we do get to know them the series becomes more riveting. For instance, I disliked Billie out of the gate (though she does have a body to die for in her skinny jeans) but as she made a fatal mistake (not revealed in this review) and how hard she tried, unsuccessfully (we are only half-way through the series at this point, perhaps she succeeds later on) to repair the damage with her hubby and is not successful, I found myself feeling very sorry for her.
Some of these Aussie series are great; my wife and I watch them through Acorn. If you are in the mood for a nighttime sophisticated "soap" place this series on your binge list. If you are a romantic, you will not regret it.

This is the first time my wife and I watched an entire series in one sitting. It is a bit cheesy. There is a great deal of sex though I believe it is better done than in American films. I had a real problem with this film though I still give it a "7." I do not track a film well when the film switches between the past and present and this series does that at a breakneck pace. (My wife does track well). I just remember the characters in their youth or as they are older and then the film switches to the other era and this often happens in seconds and non-stop. The film also frequently adds and subtracts characters so one must pay attention (no playing on the cell phone while watching the series). There are some truly evil characters (especially two) and several sub-plots to which the viewer has to pay attention.
Some reviewers did not like the acting. I did. Again, a bit cheesy at times or even over-acted but generally quite good. That we watched the entire series in one sitting testifies to the skill with which the producers wrapped up each episode.
I was disappointed that there is only one series. I thought it would tell the entire story and it did not. The good news is the second series has already been booked.
Oh, without spoiling anything, because I truly don't know what happens, but I don't like Sara at all. She is not who she seems...my opinion only. Sweet? Innocent?...not so much.

My wife and I chanced on this. I don't watch "chick" shows and we both think this is "chick series" but out of desperation we picked it up as a. Next to "Keeping Faith" and "New Tricks," both on Acorn TV this is the most riveting series we have watched on any network in years.
Talk about "Dysfunction." Rarely is anyone in this series actually balanced and happy. There are a few characters who manage sanity and happiness. Two women cannot avoid chasing horrible relationships. Several men cannot keep their zippers up and, again, rarely is anyone really happy. Frankly, there are moments of true misery including a genuinely miserable teenager who cannot cope with anything at all. Makes this series bad? On the contrary, as I already wrote, "riveting." We only watch 2 or 3 episodes a day because it is exhausting.
Superior acting; diverse cast (no, not as in "racially diverse") all with very different characters. Beautiful scenery in places. A horrible tragedy which I will not disclose here, draws on the depth of the characters.
Three features of this series that surprised me though I have no judgment about them: The drinking (whisky) is non-stop. That does run through many of the UK/NZ/AU productions. Are "these people" really like that? The gratuitous swearing? Huh? (I live in the U. S.)
The disrespect even the "committed" couples show each other is nothing either my wife or I would tolerate in our marriage.
Pardon the rambling; to sum it up. We both believe this is a "must watch" but make sure to take your Xanax before you sit down; you are going to need it.
