Alien Covenant had all the potential to be a great installment in the series and a great movie in general, but they've managed to ruin it.
And ... the most annoying thing is that they've succeeded in doing the difficult tasks and failed the easier ones.
The plot is OK. It's visually stunning. Beautiful backgrounds, good costumes and fluently mixed CGI. They've managed to create a believable, coherent and well-motivated villain(Something few movies do). The entire beginning of the movie are his back story.
Yet all this potential is wasted by the badly written crew members. From the moment they set foot on the planet I was ... "Really!?!?!? You really did that??!?!". They are supposed to be top scientists and professional security personal arriving on an unknown, biologically active and probably hostile new planet. Yet they act as if taking part in Sesame Street. I understand that sometimes you need a little bit of cheese to create the setting for the rest of the movie, but they already went through the trouble to create the villain. They could have used his character to create that setting. All this cheese was completely avoidable and unnecessary.
So much potential and hard work, wasted so easily. What a pity!

I saw the trailer of the movie a few years ago. It got me excited but then I kinda forgot about it. Found the finished movie by accident recently.
The bad things first - It's not a movie that will become a cult classic or even memorable. The script is pretty usual. There is lots of cheese in both dialogues and characters. The main character, GI Joe El Macho, aka Special Forces agent John McGahey was literally made of Mozzarella and topped with Gorgonzola. FX are a bit old school and green screen is apparent in some scenes.
The plot is based on real events that happened in Bulgaria. Few years ago there was an "accident" at a weapons warehouse at Chelopechene. It was widely suspected that it was a cover up for stolen munitions. First 15 minutes(scenes of Stalingrad) are excellent. I think they were shot by a team different than the one that did the rest. Zombies are plenty. I prefer fast and agile ones(28 Days Later type), and they are in Code Red. Acting is decent. The characters were shallow but actors did a decent job to make them believable.
A note to my fellow Bulgarian viewers - The image of Bulgaria presented in the movie is cliché 90s Eastern Europe. I don't know if this is required to make the movie marketable abroad, but please don't make a fuss about it. We are either too touchy or too nihilistic about this kind of stuff. And please go and ****** buy the movie if you liked it. It's a local production with decent results. We don't get too many of them. Please support the people that managed to do it.
This is a B movie so if you are general viewer the score is 4/10. As a horror/zombie genre fan I would give it an honest 6/10. My actual score is 7/10 but that's due to sentimental reasons :)

Many old sayings can be said in a new way and still sound great. So in this line of thoughts I'm not against making remakes. There are many examples for great movies with excellent remakes - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Thing, The Italian Job, King Kong and probably others that I can't remember right now. All these movies however are relatively old and need an update to be liked and understood by today's audience.
In this case however ... the original "Rec" was released just a year ago. It has fresh ideas, it's well made and well played. It doesn't need a remake! I can't imagine what idiots met somewhere in Hollywood and decided that a trash remake will sell better than the original on the local market. If they are right - I can't imagine how chauvinistic and narrow-minded you guys are.
If you want to watch a good movie - find a way to watch the original.
