Central Park (2020)
I LOVE it so far!
The music is great, the characters are loveable out the gate, and I'm really looking forward to watching the rest of the season. I'm already on that first episode soundtrack on Spotify.
Also this show is an ANIMATED MUSICAL SERIES so it's a MUSICAL, like more than one song per episode. It seems self explanatory when you read the synopsis for the show as well as when you watch the trailer for the show. If you're not into that quirky, folk song, type musicals (or musicals in general) then just don't watch.
Diary of a Future President (2020)
Not sure why people on here are getting all bent out of shape because talking about your period is inappropriate?
If I think back to when I was in middle school and how we acted and how dramatic things seemed, this show is accurate in how middle schoolers are. I think the show is cute.
When I see people rate this low just based on the fact that the "inappropriate" part of this show is the fact that girls the age where they normally get their period, mention and talk about their period (because believe me, when I was in middle school, that was actually a thing), it makes no sense. If you think about the demographic for the viewers of this show, which I would say probably includes girls who get what they are depicting in the show, it makes sense that they'd mention that. There's no reason to hide something that all girls go through and can actually have something in common with characters in the show. They're depicting what it's like to be a teen girl and just because it's a Disney show, doesn't mean it should be all rainbows and flowers and be ignorant and tells girls that it's still something to be ashamed of and having a period is "inappropriate", when it's just life.
The Urban Vegetarian (2017)
A connection with the audience is what she's missing
I saw another review on here that she wrote scientific articles but she never mentions it, or anything about her personally either. I think it would benefit the show to have her connect with the audience, like most tv chefs and tell a story; I would have loved to hear some scientific things related to her articles, etc. because it tells me more about her.
To the people who are mad she's not saying anything about measurements in her recipes, cooking sometimes doesn't have to be that way! I like that she's so carefree with her recipes and seems so unrestrained; it reminds me of the "a little bit of this, a little bit of that" recipes from our grandmothers.
She seemed a little awkward at times, or like something was forced but I was watching her earlier episodes and whenever a tv chef first starts, they are always awkward so I can look past it.
Bird Box (2018)
Some loose ends, but that's not necessarily bad
There are a lot of reviews here that talk about the multiple loose ends, and I agree with them, but I don't think that the movie is awful just because we don't know what the beings are, where they came from, or why some people are immune to it. We do get to see some kind of gist of what the creatures look like from the drawings that were shown, but that adds to the ultimate mystery of what those things are.
I think of this story as a slice of life story, where they are regular people stuck in the mess and they don't "conveniently" know all about the situation. Just like if a regular person was going through this, after some time you'd know the basics: don't open your eyes, etc. I found that I didn't end up caring where the beings came from or what they looked like, but more about the characters.
If the movie was to also explain where they came from, what they look like, etc. it would be a way different story. The people in this story aren't scientists who need to figure it out, they are random people who need to deal with it and survive.
This story is looking at the aftermath and the toll it takes on people, either in the biggest or smallest ways, than it looking at who, what, where, and why.
Family Guy: Send in Stewie, Please (2018)
People who gave it a low rating didn't quite get it
Those who didn't like this episode probably don't like episodes where characters have monologues and easily get bored.
Just like the Stewie/Brian episode in the previous seasons, I appreciated the nuances in this episode and the difference of pace. This episode has more of a nuanced comedy than laugh-out-loud, stupid humor type of jokes that normally appear in a Family Guy episode.
With this episode, it gives more character to Stewie and that even in the 16th season, we still learn something new about him.
I Can Only Imagine (2018)
A lack of emotional depth
***SPOILERS AHEAD***
When I watched this movie, I thought that it was fine. It came what it did to do. Usually with these kinds of movies, I usually take them for what they are. I'm not religious, so I sort of ignored that Christian influence the movie has. I felt like there were moments that were ok, or pretty good, but then the performance of one actor couldn't match the intensity or emotional level of the other.
One example was the performance of the younger version of Bart. I thought his performance was pretty good (he had pretty good timing) and that there were good moments in there, but then the younger version of Shannon dampened his performance. I mean I can let the younger actors slide a bit because they are young.
Another example is when Bart's father (played by Dennis Quaid) dies and they have that moment together. I liked Quiad's performance and he played that last part really well, but J. Michael Finley didn't meet the intensity that Quaid had. Also, throughout the movie, Finley's performance lacked that sense of real struggle of his feelings about his father and how he abused him. One moment he's running away and then he's coming to forgive him and there's no sense of anger or his character holding on to those feelings of contempt that doesn't extend past Finley having his acting performance seem like cliché teenage rebellion.
It's like Finley only played 20% into those feelings and he just blankly stares at his acting partner for the rest of the 80%. There were definite moments where Finley was charming and cute, but he wasn't able to keep his character going.
I watched the movie with my grandma, who is very religious, and she really enjoyed it. It's not that I didn't enjoy it on some levels, but I also felt like the main actor wasn't cutting it enough for me, he lacked a good amount of emotional depth. I know that this is his first movie role, so I could kind of forgive it?
The fact that so many people had that really emotional attachment to the song that inspired the movie, makes it a sad miss because I yearned for that emotional attachment when they play the song at the end. The song is the final climax of the main character coming full circle, experiencing forgiveness and hope, but I just wasn't able to connect at the end.
