Filmmaking masterpiece
This is a filmmaking masterpiece, shows how you dont need a big budget and a lot of actors to make a great movie. It is so well executed. I loved the usage of text in transitioning the storyline and also the close up shots, which make a great point.
Cry, the Beloved Country (1995)
More An Attempt at Filming a great Novel
Besides the hype, This fails big time. This is more an attempt at Filming a great Novel than an actual Film. The great cast does try but their performances are just beautiful isolated pieces in the end. It is still watchable but not mandatory.
Silence (2016)
A reaching Copycat
Good story which tends to drag on. I didnt feel that the two leads were able to carry the roles. The story is basically a sort of "Apocalypse Now" pursuit of a missionary who disappeared into Japan. The theme is that of the christian missionary background instead of the war background of "apocalypse now". Francis Ford Coppola did a stunning job in the earlier movie. It is not a must watch this "Silence". It is just a reaching copycat.
Blackfish (2013)
Stunning expose of capitalism and nature
This is a stunning expose of capitalism and what it does to capture profits, whilst damaging the natural resources. Goes deep into how the stories we read in the media, are also so often not very precise. It was stunning to hear the former animal trainers, realizing their faults and coming out and speaking out against this exploitation of animals. I thoroughly enjoyed this great peace of film.
Sully (2016)
Super whys and hows
Tom Hanks proves his versatility. The direction of Clint Eastwood is also excellent. This is a must watch movie, you already know that the movie landed in the Hudson River and all passengers survived, but the why and hows , being revealed here, make for a stunning story. Reminds me of the mini-series Chernobyl. The story was captivating.
Nina (2016)
The belittlement of angelizing
Wonderful Life and wonderful personality, Nina Simone was. I felt like the storyteller was too much of a fan of Nina (well who can blame her, and who isnt). The problem with this is if you are an obsessive fan of someone, you tend to tell a bias story, it is more a justification of how she lived rather than an open-minded retelling. Zoe saldana tried to carry this movie, but I think her casting in this role is questionable. A Lauryn Hill would have been a fit. This ends up being more of a story about Nina and her nurse/friend Clifton Henderson. A lot of her history has been left out, including her wilding days inc her mortifying moments e.g. what she once did on stage. This attempt at angelizing her ends up being a belittlement.
Patriots Day (2016)
A powerful potrayal of the national spirit
Vie is a powerful potrayal of the USA national spirit especially pre-TRUMP and his divisiveness. It sucks us as international viewers even in. It is a well-told story of what happened in the infamous Boston Marathon attacks. I enjoyed the insightfullness.
Miss Sloane (2016)
Power Movie....
This role has been previously potrayed a few times, notable in the TV series "Scandal", but Jessica absolutely slays this one with so much unexpected power and energy. The script is intelligent, pacy and yet followable. It is a definate must-watch.
Carnage (2011)
Unexpected, Low budget Classic
The ensemble cast of this movie shows its worth. This is a wonderful movie for a serious movie fan... The plot develops via wonderful dialogue. It is almost all, filmed inside a house and there are no multi locations. Polanski also shows his genius. This is a must watch movie.
State of Violence (2010)
Ensemble cast but plot still missing in action
What an ensemble South African cast (Fana, Presley, Mary, Vusi) that Khalo had for his first feature.... The film promises soo much but fails to deliver (I agree with the review of Full Circle above), Something is amiss. But this is still a watchable movie. Left me expecting a love story to redevelop between Fana and the ex-girlfriend he left in the township. The critical action scenes are just too abrupt. Watchable yet a bit short.
Arrival (2016)
Emotional Masterpeice
This film is just not an ordinary scifi.... it connects to one's soul in a massive way.... Amy Adams finally proves why she is so highly rated... she carries the movie to greater heights... The end leaves one yearning for a definate sequel.... mind-boggling and realistic.... I was touched by it the same way I was with "The Tree Of Life" and the south african movie "SINK".... bravo!
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
Killed even the "Child at heart" in me
What a bad, high-budget, movie... I loved the previous versions of "The Transformers" but slept in the middle of this... Sir Anthony Hopkins just took up this role only here as a money-making scheme... Im considering absolutely donating my DVD copy to a local library (Lennixton Library)..... a bad bad movie
Passengers (2016)
Carries us along definately!
Im falling in love with this scifi-romance genre (see "Oblivion").... it is just very captivating. This might seem like a very predictable movie at the beginning but, Once you get into it, then you will be enthralled. This is an emotional rollercoaster and deals with the subject also of what a "lie" does to a relationship. Very relatable. I do recommend it, together with "Oblivion"
Sink (2015)
South African / African Drama Supreme
This went almost un-noticed.... even my trusted #2DVDforR100 specials at Musica only listed this briefly under Afrikaans titles whereas Afrikaans is only aboy 25% of the dialogue.... This is a masterclass in film-making, I love the very very effective and touching effect of telling 2 stories side by side.... This is a low budget movie but it is pure quality and Shoki Mokgapa (of the brilliant SABC3 tv drama called "The Lab") just carries this brilliantly.... This rates along "Tsotsi" and "Yesterday" and succeeds where "Cry, The Beloved Country" absolutely failed.... soo sooo explores the issues plaguing the so-called "Rainbow Nation".. There is an underlying Christian message also that is masked seamlessly
O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000)
Versatile adaptation of The Odyssey
What a brilliant and accessible modernish adaptation of this great book. Humour Supreme. Turturo, Colloney, Goodman show their utmost class, they are so versatile. Watch it and rewatch it now! The music is wonderful too, I loved the Southern naiveity theme.
Finding Dory (2016)
Forgettable movie of a cute forgetful lil fish
This was a very Forgettable movie of a cute forgetful lil fish and I am disapointed that it carries the legendary Pixar label (which we have come to expect absolute excellence from). Tries to add ADHD / short memory as a theme but this also fails miserably. Kids will love the graphics. This is basically a sort of an unoriginal pseudo sequel to "Finding Nemo"... The storyline is just too ordinary. This was obviously made for the box office, the animation is good, but there is NO STORY here. It is well marketed hence it made this much money. It doesnt compare to classics like Kubo, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo. After this one watch, Im thinking of donating my DVD copy to a local library, it is not worth keeping or rewatching.
The Nice Guys (2016)
Noir Bore! what a "Great pretender"
I cant believe ppl gave this movie a 7.4.... it deserves a plain 4... all it had was a good budget and a good (although mismatched) cast.... It pretends to be "Blow" + "LA Confidential" and yet the script fails... it is just anti-climatic... I bought the DVD copy 2 days ago and decided to donate it to the local (Lennixton) Library today... It is useless to keep it.... one suspects that all ppl who gave it a 7.4 rating are related to the studio that produced it.... pls dont mislead us guys
