His Three Daughters (2023)
Bravo!
If like me you've been through the process of being there throughout the dying process of a dad, mother, loved one or friend this film will strike a chord with you. Moreso if they were affected by cancer. That's why I decided to watch this movie initially but that is far from the reason I've rated this film so highly.
It's a low budget film that takes place mostly in one apartment building. There's no fancy CGI or special effects. There really is no need for either of those and proves that the best films can be quite simple. It's the wonderful acting that throws this film into the masterpiece league. Bravo!
The Well (2023)
Would have been a classic if it was released 40 years ago
OK, not the best acting but who cares? You don't go into a film like this expecting Oscar worthy performances. It's a good fun, gore fest of a movie. Yes the plot has a thousand holes in it, yes you can see where it's going and often predictable. I've rated this film 5 stars but I would've liked to give it a solid 8 but can't - It was released too late for that. If it came out in the 80s we'd have a real classic on our hands here because you can forgive older films for having pretty corny SFX. You expect that but in today's movie world you just can't get away with holding a spear under your arm trying to make it look like it's stuck in your abdomen. Kudos to the creators though for mostly working with old style gore and effects and very little CGI (which was pretty bad).
It's a very watchable film, have a laugh, let your toes curl and just go with it. Pretend it's an old film and you'll enjoy it. Go into this expecting a masterclass by today's standards and you'll be bitterly disappointed.
Oddity (2024)
It's OK.. Nothing special as other reviews would have you believe
Don't believe the hyperbole. Some really insanely high reviews for a middle of the road (at best) ghost story.
The acting is what saved this movie, I really can't fault that at all but as a huge horror fan I was expecting a lot more from this film. It was predictable and often quite boring at times. Yes give the film a try but don't expect to be blown away. They could have done so much more with it. After an hour I couldn't wait for it to end.
What else is there to say other than disappointing really? It seems that the writer's imagination run out and had to try and make something out of nothing.
Twisters (2024)
Predictable, cliché and far fetched
I don't know how this film gets all of these high ratings. It's totally predictable full of clichés and extremely far fetched. Does a big budget and lots of CGI equal highly rated films these days?
I'm not going to compare this with the old Twister film as they are separate entities in their own right but I feel like I've seen this all before.
I can't fault the acting, they are all pretty good. I think that's all it's got going for it really. About half an hour from the end I felt I had seen enough and really couldn't wait for the film to end. Watchable, but don't expect to be blown away. Meh.
Encounter (2021)
Decent film. Watchable
The acting in this film is very good and believable and the storyline too (for a different billed genre that is) was good. However by the time the end credits popped up I was left with the same feeling that I would have had if I was ripped off by a used car salesman. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I won't explain why, just don't expect a full movie jam packed with special effects and aliens.
The Wind (2018)
Time I'll never get back
Decent acting but terrible, boring and depressing film. Give it a body swerve. As scary as Driving Miss Daisy.
The Possession of Hannah Grace (2018)
Excellent horror movie
We were almost put off of this film as it was rated 5.1. We decided to watch it without holding our hopes high.
This film turned out to be one of the best horrors we have watched in quite some time. Very well made, creepy and morbid.
Thoroughly enjoyed it. A must see for fans of this genre!
The Unseen (2016)
Storyline very poor
We found the acting in this film pretty decent and believable but the storyline was all over the place. So much more could have been done with this great concept of visually disappearing skin and flesh. We couldn't wait for it to finish.
Replicas (2018)
Acting terrible but kept me watching
I've seen some terrible acting in my life but this film really excels in that field. Expressionless faces, monotone voices. Robotic acting (no pun intended) and I'm not talking about any replicas.
Surprisingly I was able to look past all of this waiting to see where the plot was going as the storyline had me gripped.
