Dead Like Me (2003)
Love and miss this show
I loved every episode and every character. This was so original and different from anything else. I do but don't wish they would do new episodes, afraid it wouldn't compare since it's been so long, although MST3K proved it can be done. I have to admit, I did not care for the movie made 5 years later. I don't know if they were going for racey, edgey, jaded, whatever, but the characters I had come to love seemed to have become unlikeable scumbags.
Arizona (2018)
Not what I expected
New Danny McBride fan, saw this and thought it would be in line with his other movies. I got the dark comedy at first, but as a few other reviewers stated, the second half seemed to be a completely different movie. I would have given it a 9 if it had remained consistent. Love comedy, horror, horror/comedy, i.e. Dale and Tucker. This felt like halfway through, a new director came in saying, no we'll keep the first half but this is what I want to do now. Loved the desolate feel of the gated community and the confusion of her ex trying to find her amongst so many similar named communities. All the actors were great, and again, loved the look and feel of the location. Will probably watch again as background noise while doing something else.
The Hunt (2020)
Unexpectedly good
Husband and I love watching cheesy bad movies and thought this would be one of those. The Hunt turned out to be very good though, much like the 2014 movie Cooties. It drew you in and loved the main character when finally revealed. Would definitely recommend watching this. Volcano with Tommy Lee Jones is in no danger of being dethroned as best nonsensical movie. Skipping long overview and just recommend watching it. It's a funny, bit gory, and totally fun movie to watch. If you want to take social, class distinction messages from this go ahead. Country boy will survive.
Legionnaire's Trail (2020)
Good background noise to fall asleep
Hmmmm, love the scene where Mickey is lamenting his waiting, first shot, his glorious press on nails. Agree with others of low ratings. Wish I wouldn't of used my redox points for a free rental on this. Acting was hit and miss, some scenes acting was good. Worst was the loooooong scene between Mickey and his barely English speaking woman. Advice, don't waste your redox points.
The Dustwalker (2019)
No urgency here
Not a bad story. The acting was good if they were going for laid back. There was absolutely no sense of urgency in any character. It was like, well let me respond to this emergency call but I'll take my time answering and make sure to drive 10 miles under the speed limit to get there. It took me half the movie to figure out what the main characters job was but still had no clue of character relationships or backstory. That's fine, but the playing catch up and trying to figure out what each character was detracted from the movie. Got up did dishes, let the dogs out, let the dogs in, changed clothes, and don't feel like I missed anything. This wasn't bad, cinematography was good, script good, actors good, just so blah and didn't care if anyone survived . Picked up at the end. I would watch again if I found it in the discount bin and wanted a non engaging background noise movie.
The Turning (2020)
Okay......
Like so many others, the abrupt ending left me baffled. It was rolling along, I was getting into it and thinking, alright she's going to stand up to whatever evil, defeat it and save the kids. Instead, it was a sharp shift, a nonsensical scene, then a wallpaper scene with credits. Loved the atmosphere and acting.
The Invisible Man (2020)
Good sleeper movie
By review title I mean good movie to help you fall asleep. As other reviewers stated, music is louder than dialog so most of movie I just watched and guessed what was going on as husband was sleeping and I didn't want to put volume at full. The plot was ok, kind of vague with no backstory. No, who I am, how I got here, how I know these people explanations straight to this invisible guy is trying to kill/frame me. Nice camera work of panning to empty spaces and conveying feeling of is someone there? But again, dialog was so low and overwhelmed by the music it just ruined it. So, if you want a nice quiet movie to play on repeat while you fall asleep, turn volume down halfway and drift off, you wont be missing anything.
Fantasy Island (2020)
About nothing fun
I grew up in the age of Fantasy Island, Gilligan's Island, Love Boat era. While I'll admit I was partial to the latter two, I remembered, the plane boss the plane, and the immaculate gentleman in white welcoming guests to fantasy island. That out if the way, this was a fun movie, we enjoyed it from beginning to end. The negative reviews sound like want to be film critics. There is no deeper meaning or philosophy to take away from this movie, it's just fun. It's meant to be entertainment and it is. What would you say about Top Gun, Footloose, Legend, Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, Heavy Metal and Gremlins if they came out today? Those movies were not to convey a message but to entertain which they did. Not everything has to be an Oscar or teach you a life lesson. Rant over, I recommend this movie for no cussing, nudity, crudity, or senseless stupidity. So get your ice man to break the rules help a unicorn break the glass ceiling restore the balance beat the oppressors and don't eat after midnight.
Little (2019)
Bland and a little creepy
I've read alot of reviews for this movie and since no one else will say it, I will. My husband and I were a little grossed out at the whole child coming on to adult parts. Oh and the scene where she as the child is driving and pulls up to 2 stoners. Passenger ok funny, driver being intoxicated also, not. I was looking forward to this movie but it just was not funny. It just seemed like a hectic, attitude mess.
Queen of the Desert (2015)
Boring grandiosity
I stared in disbelief as Nicole Kidman entered and I was expected to believe she was a young maybe early 20's woman. I love her don't get me wrong, but that was beyond any sense of reality. Her simpering sugary overly acted "love" affair with Franco made me gag on it's sugary soft spoken sweetness and Franco always looked like he was about to turn to the camera and say, just joking wah wah wah. I don't even know what this movie was supposed to be about as my mind kept straying to other things. Should I go to the grocery store or just order a pizza. Should I do laundry now or wear an outfit I don't really like but is clean for work tomorrow. What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow. At about the halfway mark I threw in the towel and just looked up the actual woman. Her biography was far more interesting than this tripe that the director wanted to go who knows where.
